7" rim width is the minimum manufacturers spec for 265x75x16 tires. The stock rims are weight rated to match the stock tires. All that notwithstanding, the 265's will certainly fit and work on the 6.5' rims. Your tire rim combo won't be rated as high as the tires indicate. Likely as not the rims will be strong enough for the tires even though they are rated less. The choice is yours depending on what you are trying to achieve.

I went for the bigger rims that were rated at 3800 lbs each to exceed the tire manufacturers spec. My Chevy dealer could program my anti-lock brakes for the new tire size as that was a separate module from the engine module. He could not program the speedo as there was no 2500HD with those size tires, so I did it with my Hypertech.

You could have just asked them to program it for 235/85/16's which are essentially the same height as 265/75/16's and came as a tire option on 2500hd's

My old GM dually's stock tire size was 235/85-16. The previous owner had put 265/75-16's on the front wheels. The wheels were either 6" or 6.5" wide, don't remember which. The sidewalls of the 265's were too far tucked in and the frontend liked to wander, even with full pressure. I changed them for 235's and the truck handled better. The stock rims were too skinny for the 265 tires. Not saying your experience will be the same. That was my experience with it.

I put 265's on the 6.5" rims on my previous truck. It did not handle well in turns with the camper on due to the sidewall flex. I went back to 245's and it handled much better.

I now have 265's on 7.5" rims and there is a world of difference (but not the same truck, either, so not a fair comparison).
