WE have had slides on our new Class A Coachmen in for repairs on two different occasions. The first time was because the gear was stripped. And the second time because the rod bolt sheared off on one side of the track. During the repair the dealer said that we were using the wrong type of lubricant which probably caused the problem. We used the lubricant especially for slides which we purchased at Camping World. Do you know of anything else we should have used. The dealer indicated a silicone based lubricant, which is what we used. The dealer said that there was some type of sticky substance caked onto the slide rail but would not clean it for us. How should we clean the rails? Is this a reasonable explanation?

These guys make the majority of slideouts for most RV manufacturers.
"The Lippert Electric Slideout System has been static tested to over
4,000 continuous cycles with out any noticeable wear to rotating or
sliding parts. It is recommended that when operating in harsh
environments (road salt, ice build up, etc.) the moving parts be kept
clean and can be washed with mild soap and water. No grease or
lubrication is necessary and in some situations may be detrimental to the environment and long term dependability of the system."
They go on to say that if any lube is used, only use minimal amounts of 100% silicone (NOT WD40!) or a dry lube like Slip Plate (Dry Graphite spray) or Remington Gun Lube (Teflon spray). That way road gunk won't build up!

ProtectAll Slide Lubicant (spraycan, from CW) works great for me.
If you are using a slide-specific lubricant and are indeed getting a sticky buildup maybe you are using too much of it.

I think all lubricants do is attract dust and dirt until it gets gummy and sticky then causes extra drag and a failure. I tried the Protect All slide lube and found it to be the absolulte worst for "gunking up" (technical term). I subscribe to the good periodic wipe down, with a good degreaser/cleaner....Brian

I have been using Slick 50 spray on two different units for about 7 years now and it works great & lubricates!!I have seen silicone build up so I won't use it. I also don't understand road grime build up as ours is enclosed when the slide is in!!!

Stripped gears concerns me.. I've not done that yet
However I carry half a dozen spare bolts
When the 1st went I took it in to the bolt store (Yes, there is such a place) and the clerk looked at the head and said "Grade 8" Well the grade 8's he gave me were a DIFFERENT pattern than the one I took in (The pattern stamped in the head indicates the grade)
Last time in I asked an older clerk and he suggested I go with grade 5
I've not had to replace one since..... However it's only been 2 trips
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

We just had our MH worked on at HWH for a slide/leveler motor problem. The tech that worked on our rig stated we should NOT use anything to grease the slides. He indicated that dirt and dust would build up on the lubricant and this could cause problems with sticking and possibly the motor burning out.
Our problem with caused by moisture getting into the works from sitting all winter in IL. It was expensive to get fixed.
Perhaps you should call the slide mechanism mfgr and check with the tech depart?
Safe travels,
