If guilty and convicted it is truly disappointing...I always favored Helio as a personality in Indycar and respected him as a competitor...Helio himself was probably unaware of anything illegal going on as with most sports figures he probably has "people" that manage his financial affairs...that's no excuse however as he is still ultimately responsible as any other tax payer.

I fear the "doo doo" is deep for Helio on this one....

It will be hard for him to laugh or dance his way out of this one....too bad as he seems like a decent guy.....

IndyCar Series star Helio Castroneves—a two-time Indianapolis 500 champion, as well as the darling of Dancing With the Stars—has been indicted in federal court in Miami on felony conspiracy and tax-evasion charges: one count of conspiracy to defraud the United States, and six counts of tax evasion.

Castroneves, 33, was indicted along with his sister, Katiucia Castroneves, and his attorney, Alan R. Miller (charged only with conspiracy), who served as treasurer and secretary, respectively, of Castroneves Racing Inc. Helio Castroneves was president. According to the government’s court filings, Castroneves Racing served to manage the driver’s day-to-day career operations.

According the indictment, another company, Seven Promotions Corp., was incorporated in Panama and controlled by Helio and Katiucia Castroneves, along with another family member. The government alleges that the defendants used Seven Promotions to conceal and disguise the true amount of Helio Castroneves’s income, by transferring money through various bank accounts, as well as disguising payments intended for Castroneves as payments made to the company. The indictment alleges, among other things, that Miller filed fraudulent federal income-tax returns on Castroneves’s behalf that failed to report approximately $5,550,000 in income received from Penske and Castroneves sponsor Coimex, a Brazilian trading company.

The government further contends that to conceal the more than $5 million in income not reported in tax filings, the defendants testified falsely during a February 2004 civil trial related to matters concerning Seven Promotions.

Each count is punishable by a maximum of five years in federal prison upon conviction.

Castroneves is driving this weekend for Penske in the American Le Mans Series Petit Le Mans at Road Atlanta and could not be reached for comment, but a team executive addressed the situation.

“We knew about it, obviously, in advance,” Bud Denker, Penske Racing’s executive vice president, told the Indianapolis Star. “As a result of that, we will get the indictment, review it and move forward.

“Right now, we’re business as usual.”

Denker also said that Castroneves must appear in federal court in Miami on Oct. 3 to answer the indictment. It is unclear how the court appearance might affect the driver’s racing activities this weekend..

"Brazilian racing driver Helio Castroneves, a two-time winner of the Indianapolis 500, on Friday pleaded not guilty to charges he failed to report millions of dollars in income to US tax authorities.

The 33-year-old driver, who was brought into federal court in Miami in handcuffs and leg shackles, was later released on 10 million dollars bail.

His lawyer, Mark Seiden, said Castroneves would leave on Friday for a weekend race in Atlanta.

He will be allowed to travel in the United States for work, but cannot leave the country.

Castroneves was indicted on Thursday on charges of conspiracy and six counts of tax evasion for purportedly failing to report to the Internal Revenue Service 5.5 million dollars in income between 1999 and 2004, according to court documents.

Each count carries a maximum five-year prison sentence."

Interesting as Jimmy Johson has the same 71 year old lawyer Alan Miller. Mabe Tony Stewart can hire Helio to be an adviser, since Tony's team owner partner is Gene Haas. Haas is now in the slammer for income tax evasion on his multi-billion dollar outfit Haas CNC Machine Tools.

Unaware he was not paying his taxes,,,pleeeeease!! Lets quit making excuses for cheats. Believe me, the IRS sent him several letter "Before" indicting him. You do not indict a famous person like him without first warning him and also having a strong case.

As far as tough times as someone mentioned. he makes millions each year. That is real tough.
