I have pulled apart differentials and third members before for install of limited slips, lockers but I have never pulled a 3rd member as big as the one fitted to a Dana 110/120. That is a beast to get back into place. What I have learned so far, a 450 with 4.30s allows a person to drive 5mph faster than a 4.88 equipped truck, both getting the same fuel mileage. Not enough to cover the cost, even if I did the work myself. What I think would be the best option, a two speed rear axle. One for solo highway traveling, one for heavy towing or hill climbing.

You need to use A floor jack to install. from 4:88 to 4:30 it would change about 8 MPH. If I change gears I'm going to 4:10, I'm pulling A 8000 pound trailer and camper on the truck.

I would leave the gears alone and just put taller tires on it. Going to 245's instead of the stock 225's would probly be enough to raise the ratio some without taking away too much from the braking performance. Any bigger than 245's and you would need to buy wider wheels too, but the 245's might fit on the stock wheels.

FWIW, Take along an extra Cam Position Sensor for that 7.3L. Don't buy a junk one either. Buy one from ford. They are not very expensive, and they don't take up much space in your glove box.

You most likely wont need it, but it would be cheap insurance to have in case you do.

245's will fit stock wheels. It's what I have on mine. I thought the rear on the 550 was a Dana 130?

Bring cash if you plan of buying anything while in Canada. Our gov't loves to tax, and tax and tax taxes. Fuel is the worst, I've lost track how much tax is on fuel now. My income tax is about %40. I do most of my traveling in the USA as everything is much more reasonably priced.
