While diesel fuel in Mexico is around the $2.20 a gallon mark, some things are important to remember, Mexican diesel fuels do not meet the US standard of 15 PPM. So if you have drive one of the newer diesel engines, designed to run on the 15 PPM fuels, your use of this fuel could clog your DPF, thus cost you mega bucks to have it replaced. Our older, 500 PPM diesel fuel, along with the 15 PPM fuels are still available in the US, but Mexico fuel is 300 PPM, still to high for those newer engines. So buyer beware.
This info was in the Nov 08 issue, Diesel Power.

I'll take all the Mexican Diesel I can buy at 2.20/gallon. My 2006 Dodge 5.9 CTD runs just fine on it. Thats why I didn't want one of the new 6.7 Diesels.

I have been hearing all the "bad mexican diesel, gas, propane, butane, liquor, meat, groceries, medicines, leather goods, etc." since the 50's. They used to put a crimp-on seal on 18 wheeler tanks on southern routes to keep you from buying that bad stuff ( read all of that as "under taxed").
Yep, it is bad for you. Send it to me and I'll take care of it.

FYI: PEMEX has been selling low sulfur diesel since January 2007. You can find low sulfur diesel in the following places: Ciudad Juárez, Ensenada, Mexicali and Rosarito.

If you do a search on the Mexico and South America forum for Ed White, you will see what the effects, or non effects higher sulpher diesel may or may not have on your 2007.5 or newer diesel rig. Don't know what I would do if I had one, since we travel in Mexico in the winter.

Comments from some of the guys that sometimes go down there for the races(baja 1000 I think) say that a couple of tanks did no harm but I can see if you run several tanks of the 300 ppm stuff you could posibly have a problem with DPF etc.Have not been down there in quite a while and really have no desire to go anytime soon. It's getting the southern Cali feeling not to mention the high prices lol!I use to really enjoy the place 15-20 yrs ago.

I wish I could still get the 500-1000ppm diesel...the more sulfur in it, the happier my old-school Cummins 5.9 is.

I believe you mean Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) not "low sulfur". All of these are border locations so wouldn't be much help on a trip into the interior of Mexico. I am going to have to wait until Mexico gets ULSD before I can return to that great country.

Yep - if you need ULSD you have a problem.

Another plus for those of us who don't -
Low sulfur diesel (not "ultra") has better lubricity & usually will
produced slightly better mpgs.
Mexican diesel usually has always had a higher cetane rating than US diesel.

Fuel issues aside - Harry, when you return to that "great country" -
if you hear popping sounds, remember to . . . DUCK!
