We recently bought a new Honda GL1800 trike. Our previous trike was a GL1500. I used to be able to back my old trike right up the ramp into the trailer. The new GL1800 won't even get onto the ramp let alone into the trailer.Has anyone else had problems getting their trikes into their trailers? I found that with the new trike driven into the trailer The trailer tends to bounce more going down the road. I guess a new winch is in order so I can pull my trike into the trailer. Any advice on a dc winch that is portable and can pull 2000 to 2500 lbs? My trike weighs 1100 lbs.

I have a Raptor 3612DS and a GL1800 CSC. I haven't tried backing it in but I'm sure it wouldn't make it up the ramp. The reverse is no where near as strong as the 1500 was. Be very careful loading and unloading even going in forward. I snagged my coolant reservoir and punched a hole in it. I'm still looking at options to keep that from happening again.

Ditto on the coolant tank. Now have a belly pan and when I load, I raise the rear suspension and stand up. Another suggestion is to put the ramp on a 3 inch block. The bike will climb over the gap easy enough and the ramp will be a little more level when you crest the joint.
To the OP, the trailer bounces because you have too much weight at the rear of the trailer. Obviously you knew that and that's why you are backing in. I guess you can't move it any further forward if you don't back in. Can you add weight to the front of the trailer? Fill the fresh water tank or something like that?

Good morning,
We have a large toy hauler, when we go to the beach to ride our atv's, I don't want to have to move the fifth wheel each time we head to the dunes. So I purchased a portable 12 v winch from G.I. Joes (local outdoor store). I pull my fifth wheel hitch out and set it off to the side of the PU bed. I made a mount in the front of the PU bed for the winch,(it comes with a ball mount set-up) I can winch both ATV's in the long bed of my truck. Now a GL 1800 is different however this winch can handle 2500 lbs. It costs about $80.00, remote control, runs off your battery. Works great for my application.
Hope that helps.

I thought I hit my coolant tank also.I put DI water in to see if it leaked but it didn't. Today I went to Tractor supply and picked up a Champion 12 winch that is good for 2000 lbs. Next I must mount it to my steel plate so I can put it where the Pingle mount is in front. Then I will wire it to my battery in front of the trailer. What I do to load the trike is I drop the trailer and raise it to take the angle out of where the ramp joins the trailer.I really wonder who designed a motorcycle with the coolant tank being the lowest point on the bike? Crazy.
KWlincoln how does the belly pan work on the GL1800?

Something to think about. When winching the bike backward it seems the handlebar would have to be held to keep the front wheel from turning one direction or the other. Unless you have help you may need some sort of remote control for the winch. I'll be interested in hearing how your winch works out.
It might work pretty well as long as you have a winch and a wench.

If you want an easy way to winch it up I have the (I know make fun of me but it works great) Harbor Frieght 3000 lbs. cordless remote winch. It has a little key fob with 2 buttons one for forward and one for reverse. Just sit on the bike and push the button and done. you can even either leave it on the bikes key chain or oin the back somewhere so you always have it.

Belly Pan
A LOT of GL1800 riders use them because the coolant tank is so susceptable to puncture. The first time I loaded mine, I punctured the tank. No worries now. These is a cheap fix and protects you against road debris when you are riding. $38 + shipping

If you're going to use a winch, carefully choose the wiring needed to run it all the way from the batteries in the front to the winch in the rear. That would take some very heavy cable. They often pull over 60 amps. I had a Cabela Trail Master 2000 lb winch on my ATV up until last week, and that used #10 cable and it wasn't enough for even 6 feet. The new Warn XT25 I just installed uses #8 cable, and again that's just for a 6 foot run.
Another method that might work is to install a battery near the winch, and wire that battery to get charged when the others get charged. Much smaller cable needed that way.
A belly pan is a must on a GL1800. Cheap insurance.
