I want to surprise DW by stopping in Barstow and lettting her shop her brains out at the outlet mall. I am looking for a clean, safe campground to spend the night in this area, any suggestions?

Well if you hit the Calico Ghost Town you'll have jack rabbits and Ghosts as company! This is the real Silver Mine Boom Town, well preserved and with authentic silver mine tours, a really nice campground with hookups, lots to do, shops and stores, a gunfight every now and again...and right up the way from Barstow. Walter Knott of "Knott's Berry Farm" fame dissassembled some of the old town and brought them to Orange County to reassemble in his "Ghost Town" at Knott's many years ago, to entertain people waiting for a Mr's Knotts Famous Chicken Dinner! Have fun! There are some campgrounds in Barstow, but nothing like this!

I second Calico ghost town campground.

Outlet mall in Barstow is so-so unless they improved. Much prefer the Desert Hills Premium Outlet/Cabazon (by Palm Springs) MUCH better, with WAY more outlet stores of premium brands IMO.

Here's a website link to the outlet malls with lists of stores for both:So. Calif. outlet malls

Under the "SoCal Malls", click "outlet". You will find Barstow and Desert Hills in the list. Cabazon is in the same area as Desert Hills.

Calico was there way before Mr. Knott I used to go there in the late 40's and early 50's.

Believe it or not, Shady Lane is very well-run. Check it out on rvparkreviews.com. Not pretty, but safe and quiet.
