My 5er came with Marathons. After two blowouts, switched to Maxxis and Pressure Pro Air Pressure sensors. "knock on wood", no problems since.

One reason how tire blowouts can occur is that people assume the weight of their trailer and their axles.

You need to weigh each axle and if possible each tire. Weighing each tire is not possible most of the time. I have a 500lb difference between the front axle and the rear axle (4200lbs for the rear and 3700lbs for the front).

I have my fridge (loaded with at least 100lbs of food and drinks), water heater (flled w6gal of water) and pantry (easily filled with 100+lbs of food/drinks) all over the RH rear tire, so it could be way over 1/2 of the 4200lbs. That particular tire had a huge hernia bulge on the inside sidewall and very luckily I had it replaced before it blew. I decided to go to E rated Carlisle tires and rims (2540lbs vs 2830lbs) for an added safety factor... hopefully its enough. I would love to get the 16" rims and Michelin XPS ribs but dont have the proper spacing. I have approx 6000 hard miles and 1.25 yrs on the Carlisle E rated tires.

Trailer manufacturers seem to put the cheapest tires on our rigs and also the bare minimum for weight.

If you have the option (spacing between tires and frame, get the 16" rims and Michelin XPS Ribs and then you can be worry free...

ALWAYS inflate the tires to maximum rating when the tire is cold(65psi for D, 80psi for E) no matter what you think the trailer weighs. ST tires must be inflated to their max pressure or the sidewalls will flex and generate heat.

Alot of guys will measure their tire temps with an infrared temp gun (available for very cheap at Harbor Freight and also from China ) when they stop to see if one tire is warmer than the others. I have the gun, but haven't used it yet...

Good luck and let us know what you decided.

Anyone living near western Ma has a great tire co near them. Rucki's tire co in Holyoke is one of the best. Last week I called them, they ordered the Maxxis 15 inch D rated tires and made an appointment for 8'oclock. When I arrived they had two tech's on my 5th wheel working with in 5 minutes. 45 minutes later I was on my way. 5 maxxis tires, new heavy duty valve stems, balanced, mounted, all for $475 plus tax. Great service and prices. I talked with Alex very nice guy.

Replaced ALL six of our tires in the first month with Maxxis E-rated. We now have 30,000+ miles on them and they still are in great shape.

Hi Britt, I asked for heavy duty valve stems when I arrived, they said they always replace valve stems with new tires and they will put the heavy duty ones on. They have a brass stem or looks like brass.

Maxxis all the way!!! DO NOT Waste your time and money on anything else!!! If you rims can handle 80 PSI, go with Maxxis E's all the way around and use your new maxxis D as the spare.

Ok, That is good. Brass looking is the high pressure.

Just wanted to make sure you were ok.
