another thing my 04 Chevy got about 10 mpg in town and 13-14 tops on hwy and 7-8 towing.. as far as the power I just pulled a 5400 pound trailer and it did fine..Like they say these motors will really wind up and thats ok... another thing is that I mostly seen in the earlier 6.0 and 8.1 was PISTON SLAP, you can google it, but I guess it is not suppose to hurt anything...

If you come across the 8.1 in the GM dont be afraid of it, the MPG are similiar to the 6.0 and its a beast of a motor... I also have some friends with the super duty with the V-10 and the MPG they are claiming is what my 6.o GM got. Plus I think a better deal can be had on the V-10, it tends to scare people.....

Like I said, I know about off raoding. I was a charter member of a Jeep club years ago and had a lifted beast of a CHerokee, then a Scrambler. We wheeled all the time. I would be the first to tell anyone it's more about driver skill and knowing the dynamics and capabilities/limitations of your vehicle than it is about gear and balls. Does the 2007-and up Silverado HD's even have torsion bars? The lit shows coil over front shocks.

Coil overs on the 1500 series.

Torsion bars on the 2500/3500 series.

BTW, there is no difference in the archtechture of the 2WD, and 4x4 models now. In 2001 GM started using the 4x4 front suspension on their 2WD 2500HD/3500 models.

In 2007+ they started doing the same for the 1500 models.

The 2WD models obviously do not use a 4x4 drive system, but the suspension is the same for both 4x4, and 2WD models.

One thing that concerns me with regards to the Chevy 2500HDs is the offroad capability. Ben

You will get a lot of opinions on this topic, mostly brand loyal input.

We use all of the trucks in my sig on my wife's dad's farm. All perform well in the woods, and fields there of. Yes, I can see where the frame clearance could be a problem on the GMs, but with all the GMs that I am in contact with daily, it hasn't been a problem for any of us. All of our trucks have G-80s, and have performed admirably.

Many will tell you that the IFS is not up to the task, but this is just bugle oil. Especially for a stock truck. If you look into the hot-rod diesel truck pullers, the Duramax guys are winning pulls with their stock IFS front ends. The only modification to pull a sled with a GM IFS truck is to drop the torsion bars down to where the lower A-arms are on the bump stops. After the pull they just crank the torsion bars back up to stock, and motor home.

Yeah, I'won't mess with the T-bars. I'll just get some more aggressive tires and be careful. Nowadays, my offroading is from the seat of my Kawasaki Prairie. BTW, does anyone know if a full size quad fits in teh back of the Chevy 6 1/2 ft bed with the tailgate closed? It fit in my F250 crew cab with a few inches to spare, but that had a 4" longer bed.

I have the pictures on my phone, but cant seem to figure out how to get them to the net. But I have stuffed a buddies Sportmans 700 with 3 inches of lift and 28" tires on the back of our short bed 2500hd... I did have to load it backwards though, the winch extended past the front tires, and was within an inch of the back window with it loaded straight in. I wasnt happy with that, so I turned it around, and pulled the bike as far back towards the tailgate as I could and had a few inches to spare on the back glass....

He said he couldnt get it to fit with the tail gate shut on his 05 f150..

We run a 03 2500hd 4.10's 4x4 ecsb 6.0.... It has pulled everything fine we have hooked it to, and like many have said, they like to be revved...

Torque management really kills these motors on the low end: http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forums/general-discussion/performance/port-injection-96-obd-ii/123667-torque-management-pics-how-works.html

A good CUSTOM tune will do wonders on these engines, the handhelds are junk. Blackbearperformance.com can really change the 6.0 with just a simple tune...
