Hi all-
We have friends visiting here from Oklahoma. Just before they arrived, their cruise control stopped working. We checked all the books and paperwork that came with the coach but of-corse found nothing. We have checked all the fuses we can find, also no luck. The coach is a 1997, Rexhall Airbus. Built on a F550 ford chassis. Has a FI 460 engine. Has anyone with a similar motorhome had the same problem? If so what was the problem? Any help would be a big help.
Thank you in advance

If your brake pedal does not shut the brake lights off when up, it also keeps the cruise off. Have someone watch the rear brake lights as the pedal is pushed down they should be on and when foot is off pedal they should go off. Then just have the person in the drivers seat wiggle the brake pedal to see if brake lights come on from the vibration, as they should not. That indicates an adjustment to the brake light switch if not working properly. The other place to check is the master brake cylinder, some Fords have switches that work with the brake fluid, not the brake pedal for the cruise. Good luck!

A burnt out brake lite will stop most CC's from working as well. If you fell under the Recall on the Ford Brake Master cylinder recall. The fix was a fuse-able splice that plugged in to the Master cylinder via the CC and it could be your problem. Hope it's a simple bulb out

There are a few things CC's need to work

Proper operation of working brake lights is #1

Proper power supply is #2

Proper VACUUM supply is #3

Proper sensor supply (Vehicle speed sensor) #4

and of course any malfunction in the CC computer, solenoid, or wiring will kill it too.

I've had valves fail, solenoids fail, vacuum hoses fail, brake light switch fail, about the only thing that's never failed on me is the brake lights.. Been using CC's for 30 years

You are probably working on a F53 chassis, not a F550. Unless you are working on a Class"C". Here's a link to the wiring schematic for the cruse control. You may want to down load the image so you can blow it up a little. Schematic.

Just an FYI, Ford currently has a recall on the F53 Chassis for the Cruise Control. I received a letter in the mail to bring mine in.
I sold my Aerbus months back so i didn't take it in though.

Does the speedometer still work? If not the cruise won't work. I had trouble with the sensor(loose wire) on my F53. The speed sensor is on the rear end houseing.

Hi all...
lots of times when you give advice here,no-one lets you know how the problem was solved. We took all of your advice(thank you),and had to dig a little deeper. All of those fixes only lasted for a short time. Some days, most hours. It turns out that because the cruse controler is on the steering wheel, the problem was a shorted directional switch.Once changed, the problems with cc,directionals, and brake lights went away. I just want to thank all of you for your ideas. That was in NH, that MH is in Oklahoma now with no problems.
Thank you again.
Dennis $ Linda.
