Hello,
My husband and I are about to launch into an RV adventure in the US. We were wondering what state / area would be best for the greatest choice in used RV dealers? We will be coming over in November and are hoping to buy a fairly cheap one to travel around in for about 9 months. We are looking for a type C. Very new at this so any help would be appreciated...slightly worried that you are all driving on the wrong side of the road!

If you are still in UK, you can still trawl the websites to get an idea what is the best value for you. If you intend to bring your RV back, that WILL make a difference to your choice.
Also look at the climate, it does get pretty cold in places!! (we had a big freeze in Texas in February!!!)
We belong to "motorhome fun" in UK, quite a few members have been accross the pond to buy RVs, if you have not been on our forum, take a look, it is totally free, you may be able to pick up some tips, (see you there??)

Since you are coming in November you may be wise to consider a Class A. The tanks for fresh water, black water, & grey water are usually enclosed. In most Class C's the fresh tank may be inside but the waste tanks are usually hung below in the cold where they can freeze. If you are spending all of your time in the far South where freezing is not a problem you are OK but if you want to see some of the other parts you may end up with a frost problem. Almost any place has a great abundance of motorhomes for sale. All large cities have a great advantage. They will have airports and RV dealers. Enjoy your visit.

Try Lazydays Rv in Seffner, Fl. They have a huge inventory, you can check online. Florida would be a good place to start your adventure this time of the year. You could follow a southern route towards California & stay reasonable warm thru the worst of the winter.

A couple things to think about;
You may need a local address to register and license your "new" motorhome.
Some States do not recognize the "International Driver's License". Usually, they will recognize the license issued to you by your home area licensing agency. However, if you have an RV titled and licensed in Florida (in your name), and a Driver's License from London, England, and you get stopped in Louisiana, what kind of problems might you encounter?
If you establish an address somewhere for titling and registering your RV, and that State has an income tax, will you have to file a tax return? If you do file a State tax return, will you then have to file a Federal tax return?
I have met folks who were doing just what you are looking at doing, but it never occurred to me to ask about these questions. Besides, it was none of my business.

you cannot come back to UK without a visit to Lazy Days, I am told that it is a complete Motorhome experience
Ask on "Motorhome Fun" about the latest rules on, bank accounts, licence, address etc. They may be able to advise on the best State to "live" I know that Texas has low tax rates, that may reduce the sales tax on your RV,

Wow! thanks for all of your information. I was looking at the Lazydays site and it having discovered some relatives are nearby we may well start in Florida.
Thank you for the information on tax and registration Mowermech I had not thought that through.
Also will have a good look at the UK forum.

One other thing to remember, licensing fees and sales taxes can add considerable to the purchase price of any product. So, if you are going to be traveling around why spend a lot of your hard earned dollars (pounds) on something you will get no benefit from. Oregon for one has No sales tax and the license fees for your RV are reasonable. You might check out www.rallyautomart.com, www.olingertravelhomes.com,www.johnsonrvsales.com, as a couple of places in the Portland area. All are within a few miles of the airport, and all of them usually have a fairly large inventory of all sorts of RV's.
