The penaly was to the tail end of the longest line or GO TO THE REAR OF THE FIELD ON THE LEAD LAP....There were 18 cars on the lead lap....The rear was 18th.....
The penalties a designed to penalize those who break the rules. Speeding on pit road will get you a pass thru...The speeding may only get you ahead of one car, but the penalty will put you down a lap. Other infractions (rough driving, illegal pass on a restart, etc.) will put you to the rear of the field....Pat

The rules state that "you can go below the yellow line BUT "cannot" advance your position." The right call was made. Congrats to Tony and his many fans. I am not really one of them but nice to see him back in the winners circle.

Although I wasn't in today's drivers' meeting, I have set in on many of them. My job used to be going to the races. Usually in the meetings I've been in, the rules were laid out, and then they said, "on the last lap, you're on your own".
I like Tony but...Smith should have driven THROUGH him. He would probably have finished higher than the 18th place he was given for the infraction.

Jeff Gordon is co-host on Wind Tunnel with Dave Despain and he said that was the correct call by NASCAR.

Finally my main man Tony gets his win, but in all honesty, I really hate it that Carl did himself in along with the Biffer. Carl really felt bad about that instance.

I didn't realize there was a penalty for passing below the yeloow line. I just assumed you had to go back to your previous place on the track.

"Anything below the yellow line is out of bounds," NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said after the confusing finish of a typically wild Talladega race that featured 64 lead changes and nearly that many wrecked race cars.

"You cannot improve your position anytime you are below the yellow line. In our judgment, he improved his position. ... In the drivers' meeting here, it was clearly stated you cannot improve your position below the yellow line."

Since fooling around with FRANCECAR since 1965 myself, Mo Rambler and I both know "The ink is never dry in the NASCAR Rulebook". Smith's bad deed was advancing. Ask David Hoots at race control and maybe he can give you an explanation, but I really doubt it. NASCAR and Bill Gates have one thing in commom, "control freaks".

I wonder if he had stayed below the line but just a few inches behind Smoke, would he have gotten second place ??
