I actually don't like Fords either but they are just about giving away the Fords right now. The Duramax was always my first choice, I love GM trucks for comfort and style. Of coarse this is my opinion, I just can't spend the coin for a new one right now.
It's Cummins, there is no G.
Yes from what I understand, the GMs do ride smoother. Not a deal breaker for me, but it is for some.
Good luck with your search.

I have a friend who is pulling with the same truck a Raptor toy hauler that is heavier when loaded. This truck pulls steep grades great. I may be wrong but I would guess that if you have never changed the gear you are actually somewhere closer to a 3.42. I would look at changing the gears before I would buy a new truck.

The factory 245/75/16s are 30.5" tall. 35" tires will lower the effective ratio down to 3.57s.
Quite a bit less than 3.73s.
Thats not even taking the extra tire weight into account.
The more severe angles on the driveshafts aren't as efficient either.
The lift and 35s are killing the performance.
A new set of gears will cost $1500-2000. Way less than taking a beating on a truck the dealers will likely have a hard time selling right now.
I'd put some 4.88s in the diffs.

Down to a 3.73 my ass, you need a ~4.70 to get back where chevy started you at. The 6.0 is easily up to the task, but not if you cut its balls off. You dont need a diesel to pull 9K in Florida, but if you run a lift and big tires without changing the gears then you might want one.

In a Duramax, from what I have read and heard around the campgrounds, they are all excellent except the LLY in 2004.5 and 2005. Those are good, but can overheat given the right conditions. There are fixes available for that problem, but I would be afraid on a used truck just how many times it was overheated in the past.
If looking for a Ford, either get a 2003 or older 7.3L PSD, or a newer 6.4L PSD. I would avoid the 6.0L PSD altogether. Sure they aren't all bad, but a good percentage are problematic. I have 2 of them (6.0 PSDs) in my family, and both have seen the service bay quite a few times.
Don't rule out a good used Dodge truck. The 2003.5 and newer with the quieter Cummins and 48RE automatic trans are very good trucks. The older trucks are good as well, but in the pre 03 trucks the Cummins is much louder and the 47RE trans isn't quite as durable as the newer 48RE. The 5.9L Cummins is the best engine ever put in a pickup, at least in my humble opinion.
Good luck with your search!
What he said, or change back to stock height and tire size if you don't want to spend the $$ on a diesel. It won't eliminate the lack of power, but it'll sure help.

Is that 8,000lbs dry weight for the TH the quoted weight or actual? Seems to me gear, a bike and full FW tanks is quite a bit of weight and possibly more than you think. 9,500 sounds like a light estimate with the FW tank full.

I think if you get rid of the large tires and come back down to stock, you will find that the 6.0 will two just fine. Mine is stock and it does me an excellent job with my 4.10's
