I have about 95 icons on my desktop. I know, it's a lot. I find it easier to find a program by its icon than to go to the start menu, especially when it has been a long time since I used the program I am looking for.

Is there a way to create a desktop icon that contains icons? An example is I have 8 or more Video "handling" programs and their icons are on the desktop. I would like to create an icon that contains those 8 icons to reduce the number of total desktop icons.

In other words, I would like to compress the 95 icons into say, 15 icons, each of which would open up to show 10 to 15 sub-icons.

Running W XP Home.

Suggestions please?

As of 10/06/08, with help from many of you, I have fixed my problem. Feel free to continue to argue about what "Is" is, I mean, what an Icon is.

I have resolved my problem by creating folders as suggested and will change the folders to meaningfull little pictures (NOT ICONS ?) as time permits

Thanks,

danglo

Think functional folders rather than icons.

Right click on the desktop and use New > Folder. Name the folder Video or whatever and drag the video handling program icons to the folder.

Right click on the new folder and you can change the icon to something other than the Windows folder icon.

If you have Microsoft Office there is a program on the disk, called Microsoft Office Short Cut Bar. It installs an icon on your desktop which can contain a number of folders which you can name. You can then sort your program icons into each folder. I have used this for a number of years and it keeps your desktop clear and organized. Look for a file MSOFFICE.EXE

You can't create icons containing icons, but what you can do is create folders and move the icons there. You also have the option of assigning an image to a folder but I have never tried that feature.

You can create folders on the desk top and put the shortcuts in them.

For example, rigth-click on the desktop. Select New -> Folder. Rename tbe folder "Video." Put all of your vidieo shortcuts (icons) in that folder. Repeat for other categoies.

I have several such icons.. Just create a folder somewhere and drop your icons in it.. Then create a shorcut to it on the desktop

For example one folder on this laptop is called "Ham Radio" It is a single icon on the desktop.. I open it and there is a utility to read or set the memories on my FT-51r, another for my TS-2000, Hamscope and Digipan sit there, and some other software as well. Makes it easy to find all my ham stuff.

I do the same thing. Certain items are all in the same folder for PC users it's shortcuts for Macs users is Aliases. One click and I can see the contents of that folder.

ANY IMAGE is an icon... the little "Folder" on your desktop is an icon...

So ... YES... you can place other icons into one icon...

As a couple of folks have pointed out... simply "Right-click" anywhere on the desktop screen and then select "NEW" ... and then select "FOLDER"..

Once the new ICON of a folder is there... simply "Click,Drag and Drop" anything else on the desktop screen over to the new folder icon..

Now ... if you don't like the ICON of a file folder... simply "Right-click" on that new folder icon and then click on "Properties" and the click on "Change Icon"

A small window will pop up with dozens of icons to chose from..

Definition of an "ICON" according to Webster's online dictionary..

Main Entry: icon
Function: noun
Etymology: Latin, from Greek eik?n, from eikenai to resemble
Date: 1572
1: a usually pictorial representation : image
2 Late Greek eik?n, from Greek : a conventional religious image typically painted on a small wooden panel and used in the devotions of Eastern Christians
3: an object of uncritical devotion : idol
4: emblem , symbol ...the house became an icon of 1960's residential architecture — Paul Goldberger
5 a: a sign (as a word or graphic symbol) whose form suggests its meaning b: a graphic symbol on a computer display screen that usually suggests the type of object represented or the purpose of an available function

TWO CENTS WORTH
The story goes that a man died and was approached by the Devil who told him that he could buy his soul back for a dollar. The man searched his pockets and could only come up with 98 cent. While begging the Devil to forget the two cent he was short, an Angel happened by and hearing the Devil laughing, asked the man, "Would you mind if I put in my two cents ?" The Devil got so mad that he exploded in a puff of smoke and the man's soul was saved.
The moral: Sometimes putting in your two cents worth makes a difference.
