We will be attendibg the Rally in Albuquerque in April. After the rally we plan to go to Carlsbad Caverns and tour the Cave. In looking for a local campground close to the cave, I've only been able to locate one in Whites City, just outside the park. Has anyone stayed there, and is there any other campgrounds close to the cave?

The KOA near the city of Carlsbad is very well run and fairly new. It's a ways from the Caverns, but much better than the small park in White's City. The KOA is a bit north of Carlsbad.

Drive quickly by the White City CG, worst I have ever seen. I second the recommendation on the Carlsbad KOA. Only 30mins away, but worth the drive. Excellent BBQ joint on the hiway in Carlsbad also. Enjoy!!!

Yes, in this case, go KOA, even if KOA's are not usually on your list. It is a great cg, large sites, and a friendly staff. I did the exact same thing last year leaving the balloon fiesta. There is a state park nearby, I forget the name, that has camping, but I wanted FHUP's since I had been dry camping at the fiesta. Enjoy the cave!!! There is also a nice state run park with a zoo in the area, if you have time, go there, it's very well done. Kathy

Yep this is one of the nicest koa's I have stayed at myself. Nice level spots, big wide roads there is no issue with getting in and out of this place.

Sounds like it's unanimous for the KOA! We will also be going through Clayton, NM and Amarillo, TX as well as Carlsbad during our trip and was planning on staying at the KOA's in all 3 locations. Thought I might try to find a campground a little closer to the cave in Carlsbad. But I will heed your expert advice and stick with the KOA. Hope to see you at the Rally...this will be our first. Now if we can just get winter over with!!!

We really like the KOA.

White City, at least when we were there, would not even be a consideration in my opinion - run down.

There are 2 camps in Carlsbad, Windmill and Carlsbad RV. Both are Passport America and closer to the caverns. Now, I have not stayed at either one so maybe the good people here will give you an update on these two parks (I need to know also).
We are doing the same thing. We already signed up for the RV Rally and we are going to continue down to Carlsbad, then on to Texas.
One thing I found out in my investigating, after you leave the Rally, on the 40 fwy at exit 194 there is a Travel Centers of America (TA) truck stop which has a RV dump. That is where we will be stopping. There is no dump at the Rally, however they have in the past had honey-wagons going around to dump and fill your tank with water but for $$.
Maybe our paths will cross.
Take care and travel safe,
Janet

Carlsbad RV park on the South side of Carlsbad is a nice friendly park. There are some permanent residents, inside pool, rec room and close to eating. It is an older ex KOA but, if you're sight seeing, and not spending all your time in the campground, it is fine. White City needs to be torn down (it is dump, sorry to say)and move the Carlsbad Nat Park sign out to the Hwy. It is also closer to Sitting Bull Falls. In Amarillo, Fort Amarillo is a very nice park. West side of Amarillo, close to shopping. Easy on /off of I-40
