Toyota goes the other way with the new Tundras. IIRC they've got a 4.31 rear axle ratio, and double-overdrive in the 6 speed transmission.

You are correct. The 2007 and up Tundra's also has a 10.5" ring gear if you have the 5.7 engine.

As does Dodge with their 5 speed trans for the Hemi...

My Titan has a 3.357 rear gear, not the usual gear ratio for a truck rated to tow 9500 lbs, but you don't have to try towing in 5th, or even 4th gear if required. When I'm in 4th gear(direct) all I've got is the rear's 3.357 which is kind of tall, but running in 3rd up grades(or down them)adds a 1.51 ratio that gives me a combined ratio equal to a 5:00 rear end ratio in most other trucks direct gear, AND I have 2 more gears to drop down to if needed.

More gears, more choices...I love having a 5 spd over a 4, and miss the extra gear when driving/towing with a 4 speed.

The gears in a 3.31 axle are actually STRONGER than a 3.73, because the teeth are larger and deeper. A 4.88 ratio has very shallow, small teeth compared to a 3.08. It's all a matter of degrees.

It does? You must be under the assumption that the differential is the exact same size. I don't know, maybe it is with that Ford, but normally, the heavier the truck, the bigger the pumpkin to go with it and that means the bigger the ring gear.

Besides, the axle will fail before that ring gear does!
