Can I tow a 1997 Honda Civic Sedan? We are planning a trip and would like to tow this car behind the RV, but the owner's manual says nothing about the towability, and I can't seem to find anything online about what precautions to take. Blue Ox makes the baseplates for it, and I actually saw a civic being towed the other day, so i know its possible. Specific questions I have are:
1) how do I make sure the steering doesn't lock while being towed?
2) how do i know that the transmission will be lubricated?
3) what else do i need to know?

thanks...

Yes, just put it in accessory so the wheels track. Even the automatics are towable for Honda Civics. Since they are under 3000LBS you won't need a seperate braking system. But put on brake lights either internally wired or use the magnetic trunk mounts. Just remember you can't back up with a 4 down on a tow bar.

Not quite true!
The ONLY Honda's that are flat towable since the 2005 models came out are the CR-V and Fit. NOTHING ELSE SINCE THEN, not even the stick trans are approved for four down towing.
2004 and older have no restrictions but it really doens't matter as they're out of warranty anyway.

Thanks for the input.

Any special precautions regarding the transmission? Or am I good to go in neutral?

Also - how do I keep the steeering wheel from locking?

Actually you can tow ALMOST ANY vehicle as long as you're prepared to spend enough to make it towable or fix it after it fails!

If you're concerned about the warranty or can't or won't spend enough to do the above then you need to follow the manufacturers recommendations.

Any other civic owners out there?

I appreciate the input, but how do I know the tranny will be OK?
And how do you know if you need to put an accessory in to track straight etc? If you are experts on the matter, then please help me feel secure that I am doing the right thing. Money is not an issue.
