Howdja -- where do you find 'the good old southern route' from SanDiego to Oregon. Seems pretty 'North' to me.

Once again, thanks for the replies. Safety is my top priority and it's something I won't compromise. If we decide to travel north, I will invest in chains before we head that way. Our only time commitment is for San Diego Nov 18-24. From there, we'll decide where to go, and will be watching the weather forecast closely. This is a trip we had not planned to take at this time, but family health issues necessitated the trip, so we're taking the motorhome and will enjoy an extended RV trip instead of flying.

Chuckle, chuckle...Obviously I wasn't very clear about my thoughts when I posted that statement. I did get a good laugh when I read your post. Thanks for keeping me straight. We spent 4 months in the Northwest last summer and fall and wanted to return for another visit.

We were thinking of driving up to Oregon, but it wasn't definite. The good ol' southern route is back to Texas instead of north to Oregon, meandering through AZ and NM on the way home.

When traveling in western mountains, especially the Sierras and Cascades, your best bet is to not be in a hurry. Most of the time, a storm will bolix things up for only a day or two and if you can sit it out and stay warm, you can have good roads to travel.

The eastern sierra is a beautiful drive any time of year. If the weather is iffy you either sit it out or try another route. Even if the weather is good there may be ice on the highway from daytime melting and freezing in the night. Chains are a requirement whether you use them or not. You might try calling caltrans when you get close for updated info not on the recording or website. Local FS offices in Mammoth lakes, Lee vining and Bridgeport may also give you local conditions.

Chain requirements are up as we text from Mammoth Lakes to the Nevada state line accoring to caltrans.

We go from Reno to San Diego for Thanksgiving. In the last 4 years have not had a problem. Just check the weather. As others have said it is a georgeous trip with plenty of places to wait out a storm for a day or two.
Good luck and good camping.

Mammoth Mountain RV Park is open year round and has 30 amp electrical and cable hookups during winter. You'll need to fill water and dump tanks at a water fill/dump station and run your propane heater to keep your tanks warm. They also sell propane in case you need some. They are directly off Main Street (Hwy 203) into Mammoth so the road stays fairly clear and frequently plowed even if a big storm were to come through. They are located here: MAP.

Bruce: I just sent you a private message. BTW, south of Bishop, CA at Lone Pine, CA is an RV park named Boulder Creek. Open all year with full hook ups and 50 amp power. Cost is about $27 or $29 per night. Nice park. It is about 100 miles south of Bishop. I use it all the time, nothing much around there in the winter. It is right on 395, going south it will be on your left (east).
