We are newbies and would like to know what to expect concerning policies of various campgrounds about things such as what is allowed, walking areas, leash free areas and such. All replies would be welcomed.

They will vary from CG to CG, but you will be expected to have the dog on the leash at all times, and pick up after them. Most Cg's frown on "barkers". Other than that...use common sense.

Thanks for asking. Generally, it is best to call or review the campground web site for details of pets being permitted to camp with you. Our state parks allow dogs, but it may be different from place to place.
We have a dog and we make sure to follow all the campground rules carefully. If in doubt, I will call and talk to a ranger.

Each campground has different rules depending on whether they are privately owned, state owned, COE or others. Some don't allow animals at all. Some your not allowed to leave them alone in the trailer. Leash length requirements are different etc.
Best bet is to ask when you call what THEIR rules are before you reserve.

Many campgrounds have breed and size restrictions. Some even charge extra. Cleaning up after the dogs is most important. Also they must be leashed at all times.

While each campground is different we have found that COE (Corp of Engineers) Parks and State Parks (in Arkansas, Missouri, Oklahoma, & Texas at least) usually are very welcoming to pets of all kinds. There are rules to be followed such as cleaning up their waste, keeping them on lead (either leashed or on tie outs at your site), avoid walking them in other people's sites, not leaving them unattended, and not allowing them to disturb the peace. As long as you follow the rules and your dogs adjust to camping you should be just fine. Now, please notice I am talking about campgrounds not RV Parks because camping is what we prefer. It is my understanding that the rules can be much different at many RV Parks with size limitations, breed restrictions, and number of pets. I understand a few RV Parks have "off leash" fenced in dog areas but most campgrounds we've been to do not.
Sometimes campers without dogs are a bit... how shall I say... more critical of campers with dogs so it's important that those of us with pets make sure our pets are well behaved, that we follow the rules, and always pick up after them.
One of the reasons we started camping was so that our dogs could join us. We've had many wonderful long weekends and vacations at some great scenic campgrounds with our dogs. I hope that you will, too!
Best wishes for many happy adventures to you and your family!

Various campgrounds will have various policies with very few exceptions. Leash laws are pretty universal in these days. The ONLY way you can find out what any particular campground has in the way of pet policies is to call them or talk to someone who has stayed there recently.

We take our German Shepherd with us. Note Trailer Life lists dog restrictions. We look at that, or Passport America listing, and don't go to the ones that say we aren't welcome. Note very few don't welcome dogs, seems to us. Just returned from 12,000 mile trip and had not one problem. Note only one CG on this trip had a leash free area. Six foot leash was ok everywhere we went.
Note some do have breed restrictions, especially pit bulls. You didn't say what kind of dog. Some have weight restrictions, some number of dogs per site.
By all means go, with ALL family members, even if furry. Many of us do it every year with no trouble.

It would help if you would say what kind of a dog you have. lots of campgrounds have some that aren't allowed.

Our Kiesha is a 45lb standard poodle. She was bred at Lions Foundation of Canada to be in the dog guide program but was dropped because she was to timid. We are now putting her in to be a registered therapy dog. Her picture is in our profile.
