Another program to check out is Pixelmator however its not freeware as some of the others are. Two other small program I've grown to really like are ImageWell and EasyFrame both are very low cost programs but fit the niche that I needed filling.

Have fun with your search, have the fun is the hunt anyway.

Try GIMP most people use it as a Photoshop replacement, including my sister who works as a photographer.

This thread over at Mac Rumors asks the same question and along with GIMP also came up with Seashore that uses the same underlying architecture as GIMP.

This is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks. I'll check them out and see what works best for what I want to do.

Glad I could help

Ummm..and you helped me how? Had PC's for the last 18+ years and switched to Mac last year, will NEVER go back and there is NO COMPARISON. You however, must not have a Mac so why answer a Mac thread?

If you had photoshop on your PC you can upgrade to the latest Mac version. Probably still cost over $90 but you would have the latest and full blown version. This is not official but I did it without any problems. You just buy the upgrade from Adobe and download it, when it asks for the code of the previous copy you'll have to call them and give them your old PC code and they'll have to issue a valid code for the Mac version as your old PC code won't work. They didn't ask any questions or say anything to me though.

Never had the photoshop on the PC. Just recently getting into editing and doing the digital stuff and dvd's myself - which is one reason I moved to Mac (among many others). So....i'm starting fresh with nothing and thought it wouldn't hurt to try the freebie one's before paying for something.

We use Aperture on our iMac and really like it.
We also have a powerbook on which we use Photoshop Elements and have enjoyed using it as well.

If I had to choose, I would choose Aperture.

okay. tell me about Aperture and why you like it better than photoshop?

And can it do what I need (add text to pictures, delete wayward tourists and fill in background where they were etc along with the basic adjusting of color, clarity, visual stuff?

Won't iphoto do what you want?

I want to add a text box for writing onto a picture. I don't believe iPhoto can do that. iPhoto can't remove people from pictures either - but those are the only two things I want to do that iPhoto cannot - hence the wanting to try free programs for this instead of paying $90.00

BTW: How cool that instead of just selling me a $90.00 program the Apple store is the one to told me to look for the free programs to do that instead?

You know, a cool thing about iPhoto is you can tell it to use whatever 3rd party app you want to to edit photos. That way you can still manage all your photos right inside iPhoto, and when you need to edit one you just double click and it will open in GIMP, photoshop, etc.

Aperture is Apple's answer to get some of the Photoshop and Lightroom crowd.

It's $199 from Apple and can be had for less at some of the other retailers.

I might just go ahead and get the photoshop elements 6 - I found it for a great price - $60.87 + $3.99 shipping - which is still about $30.00 less than at Best Buy/Apple/Frys Electronics. Not to mention if I go to Fry's I will walk out with a LOT more than Photoshop! through Amazon.com - one of their "sellers" that has a 100% rating with well over 1500 transactions so I think it will be a good buy.

What do you think?

On edit - what the difference between the "mini-box" and the regular photoshop? I found one in a "mini-box" for Mac for around $40.00. Now we're talking 1/2 the price (or more) and if it's the same - would be a good deal.
