Looking for boondocking suggestions near Craig, CO for deer hunting in 2 weeks. Anywhere east of highway 13 from Craig to WY border ... or north and west of Steamboat Springs?

Edit - essentially the box bounded by Hwy 40 on the south, Hwy 13 on the west, WY border on the north and Elk Creek on the east.

Thanks!
Greg

I don't have any particular favorite spots in that area, but have hunted deer there a number of times. Best advise is stop at the BLM office on the east side of Craig, ang get the map, with all changes. There are lots of public parcels in the area you are looking at.
I have stayed at the KOA there in Craig, not a bad place to stay. They have facilities to hang your trophy.

Good luck

Thanks, Ed. I hunted area 3, west of there last year for the first time (always been a high mountain hunter) and did ok. Any suggestions for area 4 and 5 re: spots, techniques, etc? I grew up hunting whitetails in the Black Hills and mulies in the western South Dakota prairies - area 3 reminded me a lot of the SD Badlands and prairies.

Hey, nice Dodge! Check out the forums on DieselRam.com a Dodge Cummins discussion board, run by a mechanic friend in Golden who specializes in our trucks.

Off hwy 13 on the east side there are a few roads that are posted as forest access. If I remember right they start about 10 miles north of Craig. I don't know where Elk Creek is but California Park north of Hayden is a good area. Also there are several good camping spots we have used along the Little Snake River east and west of 13 just short of WY. line.

Greg-

I have not hunted in Areas 4 or 5. Mostly, I hunted a ranch in 301.
Only help is like before- get a map and make sure you stay on the public parcels.
Thanks for the Dodge tip.

To the West of 13 past the Coal mine are some decent places to boondock on the edge of the Great Axial (Axil??) Basin, plus you can take the backroad to Meeker and lust over the deer on private lands....lol

If you plan to go into California Park this time of year, plan on staying there through the winter. Weather can be cruel.
