I am thinking about installing a performance chip on my truck for added towing power and better fuel economy. I have a 2006 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Gas burner. 6.0L , 4.10 ratio. Anyone running a chip on a Silverado. Looking for insight as to brand/type. Issues-short and long term. Will be traveling in areas from less that 500ft elevation to 10,000ft plus.?????

G'day from Ottawa, Canada;

Pls. chk. out www.hypertech.com I had a 2500HD GMC (2004) Gas, 6.0 L which was 'under powered' for my rig. Once installed, the hypertech devise not only gave me extra hp but the mpg did increase slightly, as well.

I drove from Quebec, Can. to Orlando, Fl., U.S. and return in 3rd. gear, with not problem. In drive, the override kicked in too often.
Don't forget to remove the hyertech option prior to service or resale.

Best Regards, BB

p.s.I later traded my 2500 HD GMC (04) for a (05)Dodge, 2500 Disel

The chips do not do much for performance on the gasser trucks and little if anything for the fuel economy. Many will require you to run preminum fuel when you run the chip.

You can get more benifit out of improving the air inlet systema and better exhaust flow.

Eric's RV installed a new chip in my MH. It made a world of difference up front. Changed shifting patterns, accelerations and a slight increase in fuel economy.

Chips really don't help as much with gassers as they do with diesels. Hypertech is good as well as Superchips.

Even if you go ahead with the chip you'll still want to upgrade the intake and exhaust, so you should do that first.

You'll notice the biggest change on the chip in low end torque, but I seriously doubt you'll see much of a change in MPG, and probably even a drop once you start enjoying that torque. Most people also recommend putting temp gauges on everything when you start chipping to make sure things stay within safe limits. And TXiceman is right, a lot of the programs require premium fuel.

I keep hearing that Chips increase the fuel economy! But anyone I know that has installed one says it either didn't change it, or made it slightly worse.

It wasn't worth the hassle to me and I even have a diesel.

Although I'm running a 5.4L Ford F-150, I'll address this because I am running tweaked. Tuned by Troyer Performance, 3-1/2" intake, and MBRP Exhaust. I run both 87 and 93 octane tunes for towing and performance, and run a 3" intake sometimes instead of a 3-1/2". I also have tunes by VMP.

Although a gasser won't produce the power a diesel will for the same money, I have no desire to run a gasser towing or daily driving untweaked. Nobody will tell me you gain nothing tuning a gasser. I've tuned three gassers, and a half dozen diesels over the years and there is THAT much difference. I have seen a mild improvement in fuel economy (gassers), but it's not earth shattering - the power is the reason. Same with diesel, but economy with diesels is better.

My truck is custom tuned. I think there is that much more to gain ustom tuning. I suggest going to a GM-based forum and researching what others are doing. You should find alot of experience there.

diablosport is supposed to be one of the best for gm ls motors (4.8, 5.3, 6.0). better than that is a custom tune, which is what I will have done this winter. most if not all chips have programs for both 91 and 87 octane.

been happy with the Bullydog Triple Dog downloader on mine, I actually prefer the regular octane tune over the premium one. Truck responds better in the midrange 2-4k rpm's and I did get a mileage increase- .5 mpg in commuting and 1 to 1.5 mpg while towing. You don't get the power increase in a gasser like you do in a diesel by any means. I ran a hypertech in my 05 LLY duramax for over 40k miles with no issues at all so I've got experience with both gas & diesel...
