I had posted some information about an issue my son was having with, Chrysler, a stealership and a warranty claim on his transmission.

It has been fixed. At his expense! The final bill $488.35. It seems the substance the transmission shop found (silicone?) in the trans cooler had caused a solenoid problem also. The shop flushed the cooler (didn't need to be replaced as estimated) adjusted the bands, replaced the solenoids (only one was bad but they suggested replacing the other one just for safety sake) and new fluid. The transmission works GREAT! The trans temps are about 30 degrees cooler and the shifting is awesome. All of the BS Chrysler and the Stealership put him through was over $488.35 and positively had nothing to do with any aftermarket product. Now he is trying to get Chrysler to remove the restriction that was placed on the remaining engine warranty. He says he is going to small claims court on the repairs he paid and the rental bill. He wrote a letter to the Texas Attorney General Consumer Affairs Office yesterday on the restriction.

I really came down on the 48RE as being a junk transmission. I will retract that statement as far as my son's truck. The failure was created by a human not the transmission itself. As far as how Chrysler and the Stealership responded to the issue no change there, I could not in good faith recommend a Chrysler product after this experience.

So where did the silicone come from?

Silicon usually comes from the sand used in a casting process.

Transmission cases aren`t cast, they are machined.

The only way silicone could have gotten into the cooler was if someone resealed the pan with silicone instead of the proper pan gasket. which is a plastic piece with a rubber embossed seal. chrysler doesn`t use ANY silicone in the building process of any 48RE or 42RE,44RE,46RE and 47RE for that matter! Alot of aftermarket shops and parts stores sell "kits" with cork or rubber gaskets and the installers use silicone to seal themm because they will always leak. BTW the OE pan gasket is supposed to be reusable, but I always install a new one whenever I do anything that has to do with dropping the trans pan.

And BTW, what`s a "stealership"?

Treatment by the dealership, Waldorf Dodge, and the factory over warranty issues, is what drove me away from Dodge, not the truck. Do wonder how silicone got into the transmission. Mine just constantly lost it's shifting programming.

I have owned many Chrysler vehicles and plenty of non-Chrysler vehicles. I have had problems with dealership service departments (and their factory backing) with several of them. You might find a better service manager at the Chevy dealer, but then 2 years later he/she might be working at the Ford or Honda dealer. It all depends on the people there at the time.

Actually Transmission cases are cast. Then they are machined after they have been cast. They are not cast with sand though, so that is not where the silicone came from.
