There's a reason the CUmmins was dialed back with the slushpump until recently. That reason being: the transmission could not handle it. The 5 and 6-speed manuals could and can handle just about anything you can throw at them.

That was true with the old 47RE which was dropped about 6 years ago now.

Manuals - Only if you put an aftermarket clutch ahead of it!

The 47RE can be built to stand up to extreme HP if you want to spend the money. The 48RE is a result of what a lot of the aftermarket rebuilders did with the 47RE. And yes the 48RE is just a beefed up 47RE box, and is not a Daimler transmisson like some people think.

The 48RE has a very good low repair rate, much lower than Ford or GM auto tranny repair rate.

That said Dodge has two new 6 speed auto's now. One inhouse tranny in pickups and one outsourced one in chassis cab models.

Sorry, but not so...a whole bunch of people out there (including myself) are putting a lot of power through their manuals with little to no clutch slippage.
Mine has the NV 5600, and I have a Smarty downloader that I have to put on the higher levels to slip the clutch, and I have 120,000 miles, and have been towing to capacity from day one.

Let me see if I have this straight! Camping man heard that someone else had a 48RE failure so now they are all junk!! That is one of the problems that I have with this forum. People making profound statements based on nothing factual. On second thought it is sort of funny to see something out of left field I guess. This is a true case of "OPEN MOUTH, INSERT FOOT"

I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure camping man was being sarcastic.

You'd think that great big smiley face icon, and the dodge truck in his signature would've given it away.

Maybe a true case of "OPEN MOUTH, INSERT FOOT" on surveyorjp's part

one lesson learned here is jumping to a conclusion and then claim to all a brand is junk from one example. I've owned one Ford truck out of 15-16 trucks in my life, and it was a lemon. But it wouldn't make sense for me to claim Ford trucks are all lemons. On the contrary. Ford makes a tough truck.

When we bought the Dodge, it was because it was the only truck with an engine.(mho) I had two Chrysler products prior to my first Dodge pu and had bad luck with both. The first was a 1940 Plymouth that was a beater to start with. The second was an '87 Chrysler 5th Ave. that the paint started peeling before it had 20,000 on it and Chrysler wouldn't do anything about. The first Dodge/Cummins was a '01 that had 17,000 on it when we got it. Traded it at 50,000 a year and a half later 'cause my girl friend heard how quiet the '05s were. This one with the auto tranny came with a 7yr/70,000 mile drive train warranty. I'm not sure of the warranties on other makes. Perhaps someone can enlighten me.

The stealership GM called Friday afternoon and made my son an offer to "compromise" they want to pay the trans repair bill. They won't pay the rental charges because the warranty wouldn't have covered it and they want him to sign a confidentiality agreement so he doesn't disclose any information to any outside source about the issue. The GM said they have no control over Chrysler's decision to restrict the remaining engine warranty. My son told him to shove it!

Let me get this right: The dealership will pay for the repairs in return for a confidentiality agreement. Your son refused.

In other words, your son would rather have the option of talking about the experience than having almost $500 in his pocket!

That, sir, is not a very good decision.
