I tow with a '99 Chevy Tahoe, 5.7liter.

Occasionally it starts missing, drastically looses power, check engine light flashing, and stinking. This will last 2 or 3 miles, then clear out and I can tow hundreds of miles the rest of the trip with no problems.
The only time it has happened is when I first start out, the first time I get up to highway speed and typically going up hill. I have never experienced this when not towing, or in the middle or at the end of a trip.

The code set is always "random misfire-multiple cylinders". I have replaced plugs, wires, fuel filter, and the entire injection module and injectors (gm upgrade). I'm at a loss what to try next.

Any Chevy owners out there who've fought this beast and won?

Thanks,
Larry

I think you will have better luck with this question in the Tow Vehicle forum. I will move it there.

You mentioned it was "stinking", could it possibly be a clogged catalytic converter? Sounds like you covered all the other bases...

Have you checked your gas cap? Make sure it is functioning.
What is your battery level? Is the alternator putting out enough. Low voltage could confuse the ECM.

When is the last time you changed the fuel filter? A plugged filter would starve the injectors and cause a severe lean condition.

Sounds like it could be a high speed misfire. Try some GM top engine cleaner. get if from the dealer, part number 1052626.

I went through the same thing in my '99 Sub. New fuel filter, new plugs and wires, cleaned MAF, etc. Nothing made a difference. Came across a posting on a board about a high speed mis and I tried the top engine cleaner and Whoa nelly! It's gone!

Give it a try and see if it works.

Catalytic Converter creates a sulfur smell and will cause a back pressure and miss.

I had a bad O2 sensor in my Dodge that caused similar symptoms.

I would suggest having the fuel pressure checked. I have heard of a few people with similar symptoms that found it to be the pump. Sometimes it will set a mis-fire code and I have heard of some that will set a lean code. Either way it is worth looking into. The GM cleaner may be worth a try as well. I would have first thought of the poppets for the injector, but I see you did the spider injection upgrade.

I had the same problem you had and almost changed the same items but I figured out what the problem was when I removed the fuel filter and discovered pieces of plastic in the fuel line. Evidently on our last trip, the gasoline that I gotten from a gas station had debris that got pick up and fill in my tank so when I first started out or hard accelerated it block the gas pick, because the debris settled on the bottom of the tank close to the pick up.
