Harvick, Edwards exchange words, scuffle in garage

JIM UTTER
The Charlotte Observer
Thursday, Oct. 09, 2008
CONCORD, N.C. - Sprint Cup Series drivers Kevin Harvick and Carl Edwards got into a verbal and physical altercation Thursday afternoon in the Nationwide Series garage at Lowe's Motor Speedway, several witnesses confirmed.

The incident started in the garage beside Harvick's No. 33 Chevrolet when Edwards walked over from his area, located two spaces down, to talk to Harvick, witnesses said.

After heated words were exchanged, the witnesses said, Harvick appeared to turn away from Edwards, who then reached for Harvick's shoulder, as if to turn him back around. Harvick responded by shoving Edwards, who landed on the No. 33 Chevrolet, denting the right-front section of the hood.

People who saw the altercation, including the driver of Harvick's motorcoach, Jeff Smith, jumped in to separate Edwards and Harvick, the witnesses said. At one point, Smith had Edwards in a headlock, the witnesses said, but no punches were apparently exchanged between the drivers.

Photos were taken of the incident, but were not immediately available.

The confrontation stemmed from remarks Harvick made after Sunday's race at Talladega (Ala.) Superspeedway, in which Harvick called Edwards a "pansy" for riding around in the back of the pack before eventually moving to the front and running with the leaders. Soon after joining the lead pack, Edwards' car hit teammate Greg Biffle's car, touching off a 12-car wreck that collected Harvick, among others.

Before returning to North Carolina last weekend, Edwards left a handwritten note for Harvick with the pilot of Harvick's plane. The Charlotte Observer and ThatsRacin.com obtained a photo of the note, which said, "Kevin, Thanks for (expletive) me on TV - I was really trying to screw up everyone's day. Love, Carl."

Neither Edwards nor Harvick would comment further and Edwards declined several times to address the matter when asked about it while meeting with reporters in the Cup garage.

NASCAR had no immediate comment.

They're just racers, with racers' emotions. Neither one is 'bigger than life'. But, Carl does have a habit of touching people on the shoulder,.....which is a mistake whenever you walk over into another driver's turf to, of all things, discuss this type of issue. Carl is IMO still a bit naive about certain things. IMO he's the better of the two drivers, except he needs to settle down a little bit,......it'll help him in his quest for the Championship.
OK, I'll admit it. Harvick is not one of my favorite drivers.

I love Harvick and do not agree Edwards is the better of the two drivers. Edwards picked on the wrong guy to "get in his face." Harvick will not be able to buy his own beer for a month as Edwards is one of the least liked drivers in the garage. His own teammates do not like him and that was before Sundays wreck.

Two more Nascar drama queens throwing a Hissy Fit.....nothing new here...yawn!

Ratings must be down again...need to manufacture some more of that drama Humpy was talking about....... I'm sure old "Hump" doesn't have a vested interest in ensuring that the bleachers at Lowes are full for Saturday night.....Maybe for the pre-race they could put a ring inside of the short track on the front stretch...get Hulk Hogan to officiate and have Edwards and Harvick go the best 2 out of three....now THAT'S entertainment...

I'd be surprised if those photos ever see the light of day...My bet is that France & Company have already threatened the credentials of the photographers if published....or the photographers are sunbathing on a nice warm beach somewhere on the money France & company have paid them for the photos.

Nascar..how bad does it have you??

I like NASCAR drama. Thinking back,.....the draw/the excitement of racing(for me) was my direct involvement, as a driver, an owner, and then racetrack promoter/owner. Today, without the drama I;m not sure I would be interested. I suppose it's because I'm primarily interested in the total entertainment of it.
It's, without doubt, the main reason I became a NASCAR fan.
It's too bad that open-wheel racing could not maintain the level of entertainment which it offerred back in the day.

Willie...I couldn't agree more. Between the split and the cookie cutter car design in open wheel....racing at the top levels in the series isn't even a shadow of what it used to be. It just breaks my heart after growing up with and at Indy back in the day....

I'm just poking fun at the tin tops here on a Friday morning...takes my mind off how my 401K is doing...it is good entertainment...Someone commented on how the old school drivers would have handled it....for some reason I don't see Pearson sending Yarbrough a love note......but then again I figure they would have settled it out of the public eye as well.....I myself can do without the drama...but to each their own....
