I was having the tires rotated on my toad and the tire technician indicated that the tread was separating on one of the tires. Since we have road hazard insurance, we contacted the company for resolution of the problem. Now the problem, they no longer carry the tire and have offered to replace with a comparable tire and the tread/raised white letters are not the same. They don't see a problem, but I'm concerned that it would not look right but could possibly change the driving/towing characteristics of the car. I buy 4 tires at a time so everything matches. What is your opinion and how hard should I push this.

If One tire is defective the rest may not be too far behind. I had that problem years ago , first the right front then the left and so on. PITA! You may end up paying for a new "Set" or at least a pro-rated fee! As to the cosmetics , that's another choice and is entirely Your call!

Your only hope is if the owner's manual states all tires MUST be of same manufacturer and tread depth. Some cars are very sensitive to this. If your owner's manual is silent on the subject, you are going to be hard pressed to do anything but replace the one tire. I doubt the road hazard policy states they will replace all four tires if one fails!

As long as the profile is the same as the one your are replacing, it will be ok. Place them next to each other and see if the hight and width are same. Put it on the right front, as that is where the most pot holes are.

I don't think you have a complaint until you get the tire installed and the car handles adversely because of it. When you get it installed you may ask them to even things out by putting the raised lettering to the inside on all the tires. Gratis of coure.

If you had tread separation on the one you have do you really WANT their comparable tire? Remember the old joke about warranties. "If you get a bad one, bring it back and we'll give you another just like it".

I had that problem (tread seperation)when we were on our Alaska trip in 05. I had purchased my 4 tires at a Sam's Club maybe a year before. The tire guy agreed that I had a tread seperation but they did not have the same tire and they could not put a different tire on the car, (surprised me! I still don't know if that is true or not). Sam's gave me full credit for 3 tires and prorated the bad one so I bought 4 new tires. Sounded like a good deal to me.

I have a 1966 Mustang.

I went to to a place to purchase 4 new tires and have them installed.
The manager told me that they are only authorized to install the same size & type of tire that came on the car and since the bias-ply tires that came on the car were no longer made, they would sell me 4 of anything that I wanted to buy, but they would not install nor warranty the tires that I bought from them.
Liability don'cha'no....

I also replace all tires at once with the same make/model/size except on my old Jeep.
