I often wonder what it would feel like in the MH if a tire blows on the dingy under tow.
Anyone experienced this? Is it immediately apparent to the driver?

Not me but a friend lost a rear tire on his Element and never knew it. Someone finally waved him over. He said he never felt a thing. Ruined the the rim. Honda had to fly in a new rim so he lost 3-4 days. He bought one of the tire monitor systems after that.

I blew the right front tire on my Honda Civic traveling south on I-95 just north of Brunswick, GA a couple years ago. I remember straddling a pothole with the motorhome but never thought about the Honda. The right front tire must have hit the pothole. I NEVER felt a thing and didn't notice anything in the rear view monitor. Someone pulled along side and motioned that I had a problem. I don't know exactly how far I drove but it could have been 30 or 40 miles. I stopped and put the doughnut spare on. Got off at Brunswick and headed to a Walmart for a new tire. Coincidentally next to the Walmart was a Honda dealer. I parked at Walmart and took the tire to the Honda dealer as I also needed a rim. Stayed at Walmart for 2 days until a rim was shipped overnight. I think the pothole bent the rim and the tire lost air and disintegrated driving the 30-40 miles. I was lucky there was no other damage or a fire. Tire and rim was $155. Not enough for my $500 deductible collision insurance to cover.
I learned to stop and check the toad ASAP if there is any possibility of road damage.
Below are photos of the tire and rim.

Fortunately, I only have second-hand knowledge on this.
I saw a brand new high-end coach pull into the campground with a brand new SUV toad. The toad's side was completely thrashed. I assumed that it was side-swiped by a truck.
The proud owner was less than proud to admit that the SUV's flattened tire did all of that damage while he was pulling it along the highway. I was too much in shock to ask him the obvious questions -- "Didn't you feel it? Didn't you see it in the camera?" The answers were obviously "No."
Because of that, I bought a tire pressure monitoring system (for the rig AND the toad). It may not save me, but I feel better.

A couple of toads ago we used a PT Cruiser. Had a flat on the left front and never felt a thing. Just happened to see the tire fly apart in the side mirror. Still never felt a thing.

At this point in the discussion two of you have mentioned that you put tire monitoring systems on your MHs and your dingys. Please reply with the brand and if you have been pleased.
Thanks.

I few years ago a toad with a flat tire started a bad brush fire--I think it was in Idaho--and they were held liable for the damages.

Our toad had a right rear tire blow out. Over $2000 in damage, right rear door paint and trim, fender liner, bumper, tail light and a trashed wheel.
We did not feel anything or see any problem in the rear view camera. A passing motorist waved us down. I am sure a DP could tow a toad with NO wheels and you still wouldn't feel anything!
We passed a parked 40' DP and toad in Idaho, after observing grass fires on both sides of the interstate for what was probably miles. It appeared that every fire truck in the county was trying to douse all the fields in flames.
The toad front end was totally ground down. The front brake disks were ground down to the hubs and the underside of front suspension was in contact with the pavement. I have no idea what happened to the front wheels. Apparently sparks and hot metal made it both sides of the freeway.
I sure the driver didn't feel a thing. Judging from the number of highway patrol cars he had a lot of explaining to do.

We were traveling with a friend that lost a rear tire on his toad. He traveled 14 miles and never felt a thing and because we where leading the way we didn't see it. When we upgraded to a MH from a truck and 5th wheel, the first thing I added was a tire pressure monitor. The best investment that I ever made.

My MH has rear camera & microphone (it was on low volume. Sept 2008 while towing in New Brunswick Canada. Heard loud pop then looked at camera and saw smoke from right front tire. Was on busy narrow Hwy with no shoulder but stopped immediately. Tire blow out was caused by Tow car brake assist (Apollo Brake assist)locked up causing heat, resulting in tire blow out. Any one had a problem with a Brake assist failure? I was able to tow car to a car dealer and had a $4200 brake repair. I recommend a back-up camera with a microphone. Always keep the Volume up to hear the road noise.
