If you buy the version of S&T that includes GPS can the GPS part be used in the next years version, or, is it necessary to replace everything? Thanks.
Example: I have 2009 GPS unopened. Is it likely that whatever the GPS add-on is, it could be used with S&T 2010?

The GPS receiver just plugs into the computer via a USB port and can be used with S&T or any other software for that matter.
e.g. my GPS receiver was made by Holux, a swedish company.
So no - you don't need to buy a new one if you upgrade S&T to a new version.

The GPS device should work fine with MS S&T and it "should" work fine with future versions. However, I would not agree with Briteskys that it will work with any other software, it should but nothing is guaranteed.

Yes. it can. and in fact if you have a GPS that can interface to the computer (Many of 'em can) such as I do (I have a low end Garmin) your "non-GPS" version of S&T will work with it too... Mine does, Next time I upgrade (likely around 2012 or so) I may get the bundled version just to reduce the clutter in the cockpit..
But the software is the same in both versions, Full GPS support no matter if you get the bundle or not. The only difference is the GPS receiver is not included in the lower priced software/data only box.
I really like using S&T with my Garmin feeding it.. Save for when the computer does strange thigns and looses the GPS (Which it does from time to time) Then I have to pull off and fix it before I can continue to navigate. But it sure is easier than trying to look at a tiny screen on a Garmin dash-top unit

I am more interested in knowing where you bought the 2009 version and did you get the new GPS that connects to the USB port. This is apparently only available in Canada. I want to purchase it, but have not seen it anywhere yet.

I bought mine, USB attached, at Best Buy for $59.95 on sale earlier this week in AZ. Checked website. $74.95 there. Unsure about current in store price. You might call your local store.
I've had the trial-version. I deleted it and did a fresh install, so any updates where already in and I didn't have to enter the code needed if youkept the trial version installed.
