What is the best vehicle to tow behind a motorhome?

The best vehicle is one that you prefer.. here are some ideas.. there are many toads.. some have a feature that you need only to turn a knob to shift it to a towing condition such as some of the GMC model Envoys.. other manufactures require that a fuse be pulled in the electrical system. others require that you drive 500 or so miles then rest the toad, others say that one should engage the shift levers in a certain manner to put the vehicle in a tow condition.. all of the above require a return to drive in a pattern that is opposite to the tow pattern... but the answer is that you will pick one that you feel confident in using....

The best "sellers" are Jeeps and Honda CRV. They are not the best cars, just great toads.

We tow a Hyundai Sonata (5 speed manual) and like the smooth ride, excellent mpg and reliability. No problems after 16K driving and 20K towing (miles do not register while towing). No fuse to pull or special techniques -- just put in neutral, hookup and go.

We tow a Cherokee behind our small ISB 230 pusher and it does Ok, I like the size of the Cherokee, it is roomy and can carry a load on its own. That said, it is heavy and it does not get great gas mileage. In evaluating our use of the vehicle, I think a smaller, towable sedan would have been better for us in the long run. I really no longer need a four wheel drive vehicle and generally, any place I take the motorhome, a sedan would be suitable.
I see many Cherokees and Liberty model Jeeps being towed--they are popular. I don't know what you mean about "best"--that term, to RV people, is so relative that you will never get a straight answer.
I guess a Hummer painted to match the Marathon towing it would be "best" for some on the Forum--for some, what you can afford and what your RV can easily pull is the "best".

While lots of vehicles are used as toads, you'll find that Jeeps are the most popular. Probably because the ONLY thing you have to do to tow a Jeep is shift the transfer case into neutral. You can tow it 24/7 at any speed without any periodic need to do anything. Born to be toad. Besides, they're really nice to drive, too.

Once a year the FMCA Magazine and Motorhome Magazine publish lists of cars that the manufactures say can be towed. The lists are on their websites for the last several years.
We wanted an automatic, 4wd with a roomy back seat that needed no special procedures and settled on a Ford Edge.

Dihi, there are SO many good vehicles to tow. We chose the Honda CR-V because of the light weight (3,400 lbs). Normally, a fuse is required to be pulled for towing. I have the Navigation so it might be for just that model.
I had a repair shop add an addition switch just to the left of the radio to make that process easier. We get 20 mpg's in the city and 28 on the road. It seats five, carries an enormous amount of stuff, so we find it to be the perfect vehicle.
Currently, we have 19,000 miles of driving and 18,000 miles towing. I will replace this Honda with another when the time comes.
The four cylinder engine has good power and ice cold air!

We're looking at the Hyundai Elantra, an 08 manual. Ride seems good, quality interior and cheap enough we can pay cash, fortunate for us.

Chevy HHR can be towed 4 down and gives you a lot of romm and just over 3,000 lbs.
