OK so after reading a lot of posts here and other sites and asking a lot of people that I feel are in-the-know, I have removed the K&N air filter from the TV and replaced it with a new standard Ford air filter. Ya this lesson cost me some money but I thought I was doing the right thing when I did it. BTW - I never saw much of a performance or mpg increase with the K&N.

Good move, gauze aren't much good at stopping silica , foam or paper are better.

FWIW: Adding just the K&N filter is spretty much a waste of money. However, on my last two diesel truck's, I've added the Volant CAI with ram air downpipe (K&N has a similar CAI) and have seen a significant decrease in EGT's when towing and a slight increase in HP/TQ on the dyno. Still no increase in MPG but I'm more concerned with temps, HP, & TQ than MPG. I'm towing a 14K+ 5'er for cryin out loud; if I wanted MPG, I'd buy a Hyundai and stay home!!! Before you go throwing the K&N filter away, consider a full K&N or Volant CAI system for your diesel truck. Good luck.

I hope it didnt cost you any money other than that wasted on the K-N filter and hookup. You arent saying you damaged something running the K-N are you?

I tried a K&N myself and checked it after 5,000 miles. Normal filter would have been fairly noticeably dirty after that many miles where I drive and the K&N had no sign of dirt on it. That's when I took it out and tossed it away. EVEN in theory there is no improvement in performance with just the filter with the POSSIBLE exception of the extreme upper end of the RPM range and few people would be happy towing in that range anyway.

Some have posted the stock set up running under the red line does not restrict air flow enough to effect performance. The issue with the K&N are well documented. Running modifed on a quarter mile strip for a few minutes at the time vs. getting a loaded truck over a mountain pulls in vastly different amounts of bad stuff.

I've been using a K&N filter for 150,000 miles. I am constantly amazed how much dirt it catches and how dirty it is every six months. I don't live or drive in a dirty area but it sure is amazingly black and dirty each time I take it out...after every 6 months....and clean it. Now I DID cut away all the restriction from the stock air box by cutting holes in all the surfaces to allow lots of air IN,....and YET....the after side of the filter part of the box is squeaky clean. Not even the hint of dirt or dust.....I don't buy it for a minute that K&N filters are no good. Of course, it requires one to know where the criticism is coming from, and if you can convince enough people that a big operation like K&N is no good, that can't hurt the sale of your Brand X unit. I'm sticking with K&N.
