one of our mutts is scared of the noise the dog clipper makes. We do our own clipping & the other mutt doesn't mind at all. The one that's scared has been with us only for a few months. The first time we tried to clip her we were able to clip her rear & back, but when we got to her neck and head area she freaked out. She's not biting or snarling or anything, just spinning around & trying to get away. That was a few weeks ago. We tried again today after clipping the other dog & same thing. She's a mix that has some golden in her, but she's smaller & weighs about 40#. Because we can clip her head and neck area she looks a little like a lion right now If the clippers are off, I can move them over her fur anywhere i want & she's OK with that, but when i turn them on, she's NOT OK with that.

Any ideas????

Slow and easy with a LOT of patience will have the best results. Some dogs need a bit more loving during the process, too.

Imagine the challenge I had with our Pistol Pete (a former puppy mill breeder dog) EVERYTHING scared him, especially any sort of grooming. he wasn't used to being touched, let alone groomed. I would get him on a table, love on him, talk to him, let him hear the clippers run without actually clipping him, and then slowly I began to touch them to his back. A few days later I would use them to clip a small section while praising him, loving on him with lots of petting. Over a few weeks I actually got him clipped... now the parts that needed to be trimmed by scissors took a little longer because it scared him dogless to have anything around his face. Again I took the same approach, slow & easy with a lot of patience & love. I used the same sort of methods with Tootsie, our most recent rescue, who used to have a big time fear response to grooming. She has come a long way in a little over a year. Again, time, patience, and love.....

Ya know the best part about our Petey is seven + years later he is the most well behaved dog we have when it comes to grooming. Since I "free style" (without a real grooming table or harness) grooming our Sweet Pete is a joy. I always save him for last (of 3) since he is the easiest to groom. He stands still and lets me do whatever I need to do without any fuss 99% of the time. When I am getting tired from grooming all three of them it's nice to have such a cooperative dog for last.

Best of luck, with time, patience, & love you will see good results.

My granddaughter rubs my dog's back and talks soothingly to her while I use a comb and scissors. We gave up on the clippers and I've gotten good at the doggie cut. I usually have to get one side at a time which looks strange for a day or two but we eventually get this part Aussie's long hair manageable.

start slow with the clippers off and rub them over the body and give her a treat, do this for a few moments and then wait a day and try again, build up to turning the clipper on and hold it close to her and then give her another treat. might take a while but she will get used to them.

Try giving her some peanut butter while clipping her. We used this trick on one of our Dalmatians to trim his nails and it worked great. I know you are talking about clipping hair and not nails but maybe it will work just the same. Good Luck

One of our pets was not really afraid of the clippers, but she would not stand still. I clipped all our poodles years ago and never had a problem until it came to the paws. This time around I purchased a grooming harness - like they use at the groomers. It attaches to the grooming stand / table. It came with a quick release harness that goes over the neck and hind end. That keeps her from moving. The quick release disengages so she does not hang herself if she jumps from the table while in the harness. I think I got it from Drs Smith and Foster.

Thanks for listening.

What a timely question - today, Jimmy the puppy (3 1/2 mos old) got his first haircut!!

Prior, he had watched Ike the Aussie get clipped....Ike LOVES to be clipped. And for several days, while Jimmy ate, I would turn the clippers on and hold them next to him.

Today, after he had played for HOURS with his buddies and I knew he was too tired to fight much - I decided it was Clip Day. Hubby held some cheese pinched in his fingers so Jimmy had to nibble to get it, and I clipped him. He didn't budge - let me clip his body, head and face. He looks a little moth-eaten, I wasn't worried about style; just getting a decent job done quickly so he didn't have time to decide it was awful.

Afterwards, he got kisses and massages - gotta keep that "good vibe" going :-)

Pictures Deb, we need pictures of your "moth eaten" Jimmy.

Sounds like y'all did a good job getting him used to being groomed. Well done!

thanx for all the ideas and suggestions. We've started to work with her to get used to the clippers so we'll see how that goes. I found some manual clippers on the internet so if the electric ones don't work out, we may give those a try. Anyone have any experience with using the manual kind??
