I am looking at a new truck...2008 Dodge RAM 1 Ton, Extended Cab, Dually Long Bed, 6.7 Cummings Diesel, Auto 6 Speed Tranny VERSES the same truck only 2 wheel drive.

Can anyone tell me what the difference in fuel mileage might be for the two trucks?

Also, what might I expect for mileage towing a 16,000 5th Wheel?

Thanks and we'll see ya...

Maybe 1-2mpg difference, and I'm thinking about 10mpg pulling 16K with these new diesels.

I have the exact 4x4 truck you are looking at. Some claim good mileage but all I talk to while fueling at flying j (I travel a lot) get what I get. First trip I got almost 16. As time goes on the DPF fills up and mileage went down to 13.3 to 14.5. Hauling it 14K it gets 9.5 which is the same as my 05 5.9 (same truck SRW 3500). My egr valve connector "fell off" and mileage went to 15.5. After enough miles go by and I am satified that full powertrain is not going to have any defects I will hit a bump big enough to knock the dpf off. If I can get this truck up into the 16's I will be happy with that since the truck is great other than the mileage. All numbers are hand calculated. Ford and Chevy have the same MPG problems due to emissions as well. The new 6 speed auto is the best new feature and the exaust brake is great too.

Good questions, but here is a thought for you.
FORGET about mileage - good, bad, or whatever. You are pulling 16K and you are going to use a lot of fuel to do so.

Get the truck that you want and like and realize that for mileage think Honda Civic.

Well ya know downtheroad, "Here" agrees with ya but "There" is a stickler for details. I just want to assure myself that the difference isn't something like 2wheel drive = 14mpg, 4wheel drive = 4mpg.

Honda Civic... hummmm... good gas mileage.... wonder if I could pull 36' 5th wheel with it?

See ya

I would imagine that you're not going to be towing with the 4-wheels drive, so I'd thing that there would be little difference, especially if you are able to get lock-out hubs. At worst, I'd guess (and it's only a guess), you'll see 1-2 mpg difference.

Of course, as mentioned....get the truck for what you plan to use it for, and don't worry about the mileage. If you think you'll have a real use for the 4X4, then that should be what you get. If you are like many people, who think they will use it, but don't, save your $$$ and all the headaches that come with additional drive-train components and use if towards camping! I would imagine that a majority of 4X4 owners use that feature less than 1% of the time...and even then, probably didn't need it!

Good luck!

As far as pulling a 36' 5th wheel with a Honda Civic......probably not as much of a problem, as stopping it!

I used to be all concerned about my fuel mileage and still am to a degree. Just want you to know thatafter a 97, 98, 01, and 05 Dodge trucks with the Cummins this one is the first that I will not modify for more power and the whole combo is so good I don't mind feeding it a little extra fuel. It is that good. Also important to know is my 08 Fuzion 373 trailer drops the bed down only a few inches and the trailer is almost level. I hear a lot of talk about the Fords having the best hauling chassis but this thing is rock solid. As far as 4X4 is concerned I tow a toy hauler and 4 wheel low works great to get the trailer into spots without having to lay into the throttle to get things moving.

Couldn't be enough difference in mileage to off set the advantage of having 4X4. I use mine a lot sightseeing and hunting, plus its much better to get caught in a snow storm with 4X4 than without. Some think that a posi rear-end is enough, don't believe that bunk

Our '08 gets about 1 mpg less than our '01 did empty but the same towing and with a lot more power. We have 4x4 (the '01 also). Don't use it a lot but probably 90% of the time we do use it, we need it. The rest of the 4x4 time is for fun on back roads, etc.
