While camping this weekend, I have to tip my hat to a fellow towing a monster tri-axle toy hauler with his Chevy 2500.

The GVW on the trailer was 18,000 lbs, and he had it loaded down pretty good. Quite a load on the truck, as it was squatted down pretty far, Having the Duramax, it surely pulled okay. He said it could maintain about 45 MPH on the hills, so he wasn't doing too bad.

He said he got good fuel mileage pulling the rig, but he didn't say what he actually got.

I have pulled loads of that size before, but not sure I would want to do it down the highway for 100's of miles, but to each his own.

Yep the D/A will pull it because it has the same drive train as all GM diesels. Sure he's okay with that load...probably only a couple/three thousand pounds over weight. No doubt he's a member of the "pulls fine never had a problem crowd."

Nobody said you had to be smart to pull a 5er.

Remember the old saying,

I can't say that I haven't pushed the limits myself, but I don't go over my tire's ratings nor go very far or fast with an oversize load.

This fellow had to be over his tire rating by a considerable amount. This coupled with highway speeds would be my worry.

I wouldn't worry about the drivetrain, this is same engine and tranny used in the the 5500 GM trucks, so I think he will be fine.

Not entirely true. Might be the same engine and transmission, but the rear end is different as are the tires and wheels. And the engine is derated for all applications over C/K3500

I know a guy like that here, too. '05 Chevy K2500 Duramax, pulling an 18K GVWR tri-axle toy hauler. The truck's wheels are BLACK. They're supposed to be chrome; it's all brake dust...

The only difference here is this guy recognizes that he's got way too much trailer for his truck.

I meant the engine and tranny should be fine, but I agree the tires and wheels are what I would be worried about. Too much weight for too little rubber.
