Well, as I said Whimsock, I feel on sorrow for the DUI driver.. Now for the family.. That may be another issue. Depending on the situtation.
There is much in the O/P's post that was not said, mostly because I strongly the O/P does not know.. And, to be honest, neither do I, and that will make a difference in how I feel about those affected by the "Fall out"
As for the DWI driver though... Well, they kill people, and they do it blindly, They are equal opportunity killers sparing no one in their path to the home of the devil. Not women, not children, not elderly, not even pedestrians. They can and do kill them all... I have lost several 1st and 2nd level friends to drunk drivers, co-workers, and such. And I feel on compassion at all for the drunk driver, not a bit. When it comes to drunk drivers I kind of feel like Judge Brang (Rhymes with Hang and for good reason) who said to the victim in a drunk driving accident (From memory so may not be exact): I'm sorry but they limit the sentence I can impose in a case such as this, Then he turned to the defendant, now a convict, and proceeded to explain in very exacting detail just exactly what those limits were. (In short he "Threw the book" at him) I have a friend now who is waiting on his medical bills to be paid from when a drunk rear ended him. I do not feel sorry for drunk drivers. I do not feel sorry for those who enable them. (This is what was not covered by the O/P, I don't know if the "friend" was an enabler or not, and can't possibly know) Not a bit.
Of course part of what I did for a quarter of a century was assist those who patrol for drunk drivers and escort them to a place of contemplation (jail)
Alas, though usually My troopers got the drunk... Occasionally it worked the other way around.. And then I had another state funeral to attend.
Nothin adds excitment like something that is none of your business

One thing about it... you can't just change anyone's strong feelings by preaching at them. Forgiveness, compassion, empathy and understanding come easily for some and not so easy for others, depending upon circumstances. Again, life experiences at times outweigh some of our better character traits. Results will/can/do vary.
We've all made mistakes, nobody is perfect....heaven knows I speak about that from experience.... not just for myself but for my loved ones as well. Oh boy do we have experience in imperfection! The people we surround ourselves with can either work with us or against us or choose to say nothing rather then cause heartache. At times I've chosen one or all of these options, depends upon circumstances. But then again.... I realize I'm not perfect.

Rebecca, you’re not being mean at all!
I don’t want to see “anyone hurting” But… especially the victims of this “selfish act”… “crime”
Put me down as not having much sympathy for the guy. Maybe I’m hard arse, but my feelings are set in stone when it comes to this and there is no fine line.
You either drive sober or you don’t, if you don’t I take it personally. You know… that my family on the same road thing. Zero tolerance here.

I see far too many people equating what he did to murder. No one was killed.
god forbid anyone here drives with a trailer to heavy for his truck and brakes (i've seen the posts)
god forbid anyone here does ANYTHING a little foolish (seen MANY posts here stating exactly that)
For the record... I don't drink anymore and do not drink and drive.
I just think that people caught doing the same crimes... should be treated equally... and maybe the sober ones should be treated harsher (they know better!).
Some of you people seem a little too perfect for me to believe...

I’m not claiming to be perfect in any way.
Are you saying we should be sympathetic to a repeat DUI offender that got hurt by his own doing?
That’s sad...

To quote a minister friend, "You can love the sinner and not love the sin". This friend of yours cannot help loving her son and may be teling you these things in some sort of effort to let you know he is still 'paying' for his foul deed. If you do indeed love her, then do just that - love her and not what the son has done. If she continues to mention it, simply tell her you have no sympathy for him or his act, that he is lucky to be alive and have a mother that cares for him.
I put a lot of them in jail over the years and heard almost every story there is to be heard. Nothing could ever convince me driving drunk was justified.

I'm not sure anyone is feeling sorry for the DUI offender. The OP posted about her inability to sympathize with his mother. I am a harsh critic of DUI myself, (DWI here in Texas) but I can feel his mothers worries about her son.
