Has anyone had any problems with the chrome rear hub covers getting very warm and actually buckling slightly and distorting the chrome finish? These are plastic covers with a chrome finish. It seems as though there is excessive heat from the hub. The fluid in the differential is at the correct level and I use the exhaust brake all the time so I don't think the brakes are overheating. This happens even when driving on the flat. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this.

WOW, sounds scary.

I carry an infra-red temp gun to check axle hubs and such. You definitely have a bad heat source somewhere that should not be overlooked. You should go invest in a temp gun, take the covers off, go for a long drive, take some readings, try to isolate the problem and get it narrowed for your medium duty GM dealer.(they need all the help they can get)

Whatever is causing the heat source may leave you high and dry sitting along the interstate somewhere and spoiling several days, even weeks of RV fun.

Please let us know what is eventually found..

A fellow Kodiak owner had problems with his brakes. GM rebuilt the complete rear brakes. The brakes were not releasing.

Mine do not get hot... I'd have them checked out!

Traveled many miles in the California and Arizona desert and at freeway speeds towing either a car or an enclosed trailer and have never seen any elevated temps on the axle covers.

As others have said I'd have it checked out

No cigar. They are not provided by GM, they are made in China and added by Jayco. My right rear collapsed in the same manner and it was entirely from heat from the sun. The unit had been sitting for 2 months on our lot in Florida so it had nothing to do with brakes or anything else.

Jayco replaced it without any questions.

I posted photos to the Jayco group in a message but forgot to put them in the photos section - which I'll do later today. You might want to click on the link below to join the Kodiak Yahoo Group. I can guarantee the owner will accept you.

On our 2005 Endura the hubs covers made noise. Plus I could not inspect the lug nuts. Took the covers off and gave them away.
You are better off being able to inspect your nuts daily.

Yes, I believe squirrels are strong believers in that theory.
