I was just browsing craigslist, and noticed that a lot of things seem to have "cly"s.
Snowmobiles, motorcycles, vehicles, even airplanes have them, it seems.
What IS a "cly"?

That is it. Cyls = cylinders. Just like HP = horse power. I think they spelled the abbreviation wrong! CYLS.

That would seem logical, except that as a retired mechanic who had to write a LOT of reports over the years, I know that the abbreviation for "cylinders" is the first three letters of the word: "CYL.", and I know that an abbreviation always ends with a period.
So, what is a CLY?
Perhaps, as Frank says, it IS an erroneous spelling of the abbreviation. If so, how in the world did such an obvious error ever become so common!

I did a quick search for "cly acronym" and this is what I came up with:

Acronym Definition
CLY Calvi, Corsica, France - Ste Catherine (Airport Code)
CLY Lyocell Fibres

I'm pretty sure that's not what they meant to place in those ads.

I also vote for cylinders.

I suspect the average, non-mechanical type posting most of the adds don't know how to spell the word correctly. Sounding it out, one hears the "C" and the "L" first, and there is a "Y" somewhere, so it ends up "CLY".

One other posibility.....Their are 2cycle and 4cycle engines in the vehicales you listed....
With out seeing the adds I would think it is short for either "cylinder" or "cycle"

Oh great. Now I have to worry about "vehicales" too.

Why do people pay to go up tall buildings and then put money in binoculars to look at things on the ground?
