Hi everyone, We are checking in to Ocean Lakes in Myrtle Beach on Sunday 3/28. We are leaving from NY and I can leave NY as early as 3pm on Friday 3/26 which gives me time to do maybe a quick 1 or 2 things on the way down. If we don't find anything fun I'll just leave sometime on Saturday.

I'm driving a 29' Class C and not towing a car. It will just be me and my two kids who are 15 & 16 (boy and girl). It is a little long to drive by myself and not stop overnight (although I could if I had to) so I wanted to break up the trip anyway and thought if I leave on Friday instead maybe we could find something to do. When I was young I remember going to Luray Caverns and LOVED it so that is one thought. We have already done DC so that's out. Does anyone have any ideas for things the kids might enjoy anywhere between NY and SC that aren't too far off our route. Unfortunately they are more into commercial stuff than nature type things but they'll have to live through Luray Caverns if we go there because I WANT TO GO : )

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Take advantage of the extra day to stop before the sun goes down, have time to stroll around the campground or take a short hike in, then end the day with some time around a campfire.

The best thing to do is wing it. We are not sure how far you want to drive or what route you are taking. We like to plan our route and check out CG's along the way. We use RVpark reviews.com to check out CG's in the area and local attractions. That way we are prepared to what is in a specific area and if we decide to stop, we will. This method works best for us, mainly if bad weather is a factor and I dont feel like driving in it. Enjoy your trip.

As a father of three, including a 16 year old girl and 14 year old boy, and having survived two long trips with them in the last year, it's really up to what they are interested in.

My daughter loves vintage clothing stores & books and my son loves surplus/antique stores. But I doubt that lines up with your kids.

What worked out really well for the last couple years is have them help with the planning, and what to see along the way. What got them motivated was that their 40+ year old dad would be in charge of all the attractions and stops otherwise. Doesn't mean the whole trip caters to them, they just get to add a stop or two that is special to them.

But it can't be something we can do locally, so a stop at the Gap, Hot Topic, Starbucks, etc, aren't on the menu.

Find a campground with a really good rec room. They can play there games while you relax by the fire with a beer.

Not sure you're coming down I-95, and it's maybe a little off the direct route, but a thought would be Wilmington, NC. There's the USS North Carolina (a WWII battleship) to tour through, Fort Fisher (huge Civil War earthwork fort), and historic downtown, which I bet has a lot of funky 'shoppes'... I haven't been in a while myself, so I can't suggest parking for downtown, but the other ones should be no problem. Get off I-95 at I-40E, and it's a straight shot.

Take the Delmarva and stop at St Michaels and go to the Chesapeake Maritime Museum They have a big parking lot and it should ahve plenty of space that time of the year. There are a few state park cgs that are open year round below Salisbury, Md. We have spent a night at Pocomoke River SP. We were the only people in the park on a snowy night. Great Sleeping! The Bridge Tunnel is an interesting place. I find the Delmarva to be a relaxing drive rather than Baltimore/DC/Richmond which sucks.

The Route is Delaware RT 1 to 13. St Michaels is about 35 minutes out of your way, but worth it.

I almost forgot Assateague National Seashore is a GREAT place to camp. Your kids might enjoy that. Watch out for the wild horses. They are worse than bears. I had a great meal at a restaurant just off of the island. All you can eat crabs.

Enjoy the trip!

Thanks for all the great suggestions. I do like them all!!! I think I will show them to the kids and let them pick or see if they have any of their own. I'm liking the relax and take your time suggestion but somehow I doubt they will pick that one. Have fun & be safe everyone.
