We will be coming north on I25 and was told that Hwy 60 to Hwy 54 north was a good way to miss Albuquerque on our way to Liberal, KS on Hwy 54. We usually get off I40 at Tucumcari to get on Hwy 40. Looks kinda desolate on map. What about steep inclines??

US 60 to 54 is fine. Where did you start at? The best place to catch 54 is in Alamogordo. BTW Albuquerque is not a problem to go through even during rush hour.

I-25 starts in Las Cruces, we take US 70 to Alamogordo & US 54. We have used this route many times and have used it to get to Liberal, KS as well. But US 60 would also work.

As for being desolate, we're in New Mexico, we have a lot of desolate here. Ha! But this wouldn't be tooooo desolate, I am thinking. Should be a goodly bit of traffic and cell phones may even work in most places. I am sure NM State Police will be going by now and then as well.

As for steep climbs, the steepest would be if you use US 70 out of Las Cruces to get over the pass into the Tularosa Basin (White Sands Area) and it is not too bad of a climb. But I have never taken the US 60 off I-25 route all the way to US 54. I have driven it from Mountainair to I-25. No steep climbs on it. Wouldn't think there would be the rest of the way. More rolling hills than anything.

By Mountainair, the Quarai, Abó, and Gran Quivira ruins are worth a visit Salinas Pueblo Missions National Monument and Salinas Pueblo Missions Nat'l Mon't and Gran Quivira and Quarai and Over View.

We have driven US 60 and US-54 from Bernardo, NM to Liberal, KS several times. It is decent 2 lane. Try to avoid having to get fuel in Vaughn as the price is always high. The last time we took that route a couple of years ago there were some dead spots on the cell phone and at one point the only radio station I could get was an AM station broadcasting in Navajo. All of the steep grades I remember are West of I-25 between Socorro and Springerville and the Salt River Canyon between Show Low and Phoenix.

Safe travels!
