RE: Air impact tool torque

My experience with our home air tools is that the 450 ft/lbs of torque rating will never be achieved without the correct compressor. Check out the needed air pressure and cubic feet / minute of air needed to properly power the air gun - to reach that spec so that your compressor is up to the size of job you need.
One way around that is to borrow the neighbor's Snap On (36 Volt IIRC) impact gun rated @ 450 Ft/lbs of torque - more than enough to snap off 2 seized lugs on a tractor.
We do carry a breaker bar (Johnson Bar in Canada) in the van.

RE: Goodyear truck tires

Tag on our 3/4 ton van's door says 50 PSI when not towing and 80 PSI when towing.
Uneven wear on the front tires (outside edges - air pressure too low) necessitated front tire pressures be raised to 60 PSI when not towing and that greatly improved the way the van drove and the tires wore evenly.
Our van came with Laredo (load range E) as original equipment and these tires were terrible for rapid wear, towing or not. Since then we have installed Toyo Open Country AT and GoodYear Wrangler Silent Armor and both have more than doubled what we experienced with the Laredo's but not quite smkettner's 67000 miles - wow!
We did weigh our rig at a local CAT Scale fully loaded for camping a few times (along with 2 different hitches) and our van's actual axle weights (while connected) did allow us to drop front and rear maximum tire pressures slightly.
Your trailer is different, so after you get your rig weighed take your axle weight numbers to your tire dealer for for the "actual pressure they recommend" for towing. Drop the pressures accordingly when not towing.
Please make sure the new replacement tires are the CORRECT size and LOAD RANGE as this would not be the first time a human made a mistake. So many used HD trucks on dealers lots with the WRONG LOAD RANGE.
It took 2 days for the new Goodyear Wrangler S.Armors to arrive at my dealer after I ordered 2 new tires for the front - 1st week of December.

Send me a PM with tire size and load range if they are still on B.O. by Friday

RE: Toyo tires & RMX shocks from Les Schwab

The Toyo Open Country AT's (LT 225/75/16 load range E) were the first set of All Terrain tires we put on our van after very underwhelming results with the OE stock M/S tires on anything but dry pavement.
The improvement in traction in all conditions was noticeable but especially good in Great Lakes winter conditions. They were no more noisy than the stock tires, handled the heat of towing in summer and more than doubled the mileage of the stock tires.
FWIW, 2 years ago I did try another brand (because of reputation) but was not happy with the results, so the dealer changed out the new BS for a set of Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor and I have found them to be even better in heavy snow and slush than the Toyo's but neither tire will let you down.
Happy New Year,
Mike

RE: How to find out which side wheel bearing is going bad ?

I thought grinding noises from the front end of a FWD car or 4X4 or AWD truck or Suv are the result of a failing front C.V. (Constant Velocity) joint or Tripot (inner CV on IFS) joint, or universal joint (fixed live axle) going bad ... and that a failing wheel bearing / hub made a louder and louder humming noise as they go bad.
If the humming got louder at speed turning left - it was the a bad R.F. bearing / hub.
If the humming got louder at speed turning right - it was the L.F. bearing / hub.
If it is the bearing (hub), then I agree with the_fox about replacing both sides now (along with an alignment) before the one side you don't change leaves you stranded and not in a very merry mood this time of year.
Good luck,
Mike

RE: Fuel Tank Size

Sorry I do not have the link(s) handy but there are aftermarket companies out there that make Extended Capacity Replacement Fuel Tanks for both gas and diesel short bed pick ups (and extra large capacity tanks for long bed trucks too). These give you full use of the truck bed but are not cheap and have less shielding or protection than the smaller stock fuel tanks they replace.
Another option and slightly less expensive is to add a pick up truck tool box style tank to the front of the truck bed which is preferred if going off-road is important to you.
Hopefully there are some members here with first hand experience to recommend one over another brand.

RE: Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 Tires

Joe, I like the Ground Hawgs over the BFG T/A KO's because of the wide open shoulder tread blocks but unfortunately they were not available in my size & range when I first checked. Would have had to upgrade the van's wiring, amplifiers and get some 0 ohm speakers - LOL!

RE: Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 Tires

Joe, I do not question Bridgestone’s sales success but I do question why the Revo 2's do not yet carry a severe rating based merely on reports from tire rack customers while other tires meet or exceed more stringent severe criteria and carry the Mountain/Snowflake?
I needed something that was a big improvement over stock and whatever subjective yardstick the OE Uniroyal’s were measured by, IMPROVED TRACTION IN SNOW was priority number 1, followed by Traction on wet roads, Longevity and how Quiet they were.
Toyo Open Country AT tires that were recommended by our tire dealer were a huge improvement over stock in every category that was improtant to me but the switch to the G.Y. Silent Armor's was the result of a tire test I saw in 06 or 07. Again another big improvement when they were installed.
I still slow down and drive accordingly to road and weather conditions but I will wait for a comprehensive test review on the Revo 2's before I change my mind. If they are better, they will be on DW's SUV.

RE: Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 Tires

Sorry, I should have said the Good Year Wrangler Silent Armor tires were the only set of tires in our vans OE size and load range that I had TRIED which came with the
http://www.tirerack.com/images/winter/photos/tech/severe_snowflake.gif
rather than sounding like they were the only tires available with this rating.
There are also some passenger car tires out there with the same severe rating.
After previous issues with the van's O.E. Uniroyal tires that the manufacturer refused to stand behind, I would not buy a set of BFG's, Uniroyal or Michelin's (same parent company in Canada) and IIRC, the WC XTX's are also manufactured by G.Y.
General's were not available in OE size & load range.

RE: Bridgestone Dueler A/T Revo 2 Tires

My experience with Dueler AT Revo's on the van in the snow was worse than what we were experiencing with the old Toyo Open Country AT's they replaced, so the dealer got me a set of Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armor/Armour.
Of all of the All Terrain tires we have had on the van, only the Good Year Wrangler Silent Armor tires have excelled in every condition including towing. It is also the only tire to carry the ->
http://www.tirerack.com/images/winter/photos/tech/severe_snowflake.gif
Mountain SnowFlake symbol on the sidewall recognizing their ability in severe conditions which makes it unnecessary to change to different snow tires where mandated by law for winter.
Cross Terrains on DW's SUV are not bad in snow - so I will certainly watch for the feed back on the Dueler A/T Revo 2 Tires. However the Wrangler S.A. are still top of the replacement at the moment.
Puddle Jumper has Winterforce (installed last week) tires for winter.

RE: pulling with a van

You left out the E350 van's factory optional Extendable/Retractable towing mirrors,
Optional integrated Trailer Brake Module
Tachometer
and Ford's great looking integrated optional HD (8 bolt) aluminum wheels.
GM was supposed to install the 6 Speed automatic in the 2500/3500 vans for 2010 but GM's website still says 4 speed auto and so does the "build it now option".
Still no tach, no extendable towing mirrors - not sure on optional integrated Trailer Brake Module.
