Introducing Tally & Eve

Life has really gotten in the way of updating photos. So here are the two pups we are keeping from Bette's litter. Renee's Tally http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Tally/IMG_1979.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Tally/IMG_0010.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Tally/IMG_0033.jpg Mark's Eve http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Eve/IMG_1995.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Eve/IMG_1969.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v337/Pipedream_Farm/Eve/IMG_0070.jpg

RE: Bringing dog to Myrtle Beach - lyme disease?

I've had 1 dog get lyme and therefore have seriously considered our options. We have discussed vaccinating against lyme, the new vaccine (OSP) has a >90% efficacy but only has a 1 year duration of immunity. We have chosen to not vaccinate, but to use Frontline and wll treat any that get infected. The treatment for lyme is very effective (if treated early) and not expensive. The vaccine is expensive (as compared to other vaccines) AND only covers one of many tick borne diseases. Mark

RE: New puppy coming in 10 days

Also, we typically keep the puppy-adult play time less than the puppy-human time so that the pup is bonding with us more than the adult dog.

RE: New puppy coming in 10 days

If you have any specific questions I'll try to answer them. We have raised many Border Collie pups. We have never introduced dogs in neutral territory since the interactions will always be different in what the adult considers home, even with non-pack members (including previous pack members) that they already know. Our pack is currently 6 adult Border Collies, 1 Greyhound, and 2 Border Collie pups. We occasionally have an adult Border collie in for training or puppy (Border Collie) raise for other people. We always supervise introductions of new pack members and all puppy/adult interactions. We always crate train our dogs. Try this great resource: Border Collie Boards Mark

RE: Hate shoveling snow...? Then you need this...

Plowing doesn't work well for our drive (the only place to pile snow is at either end of the 1/4 mile drive). Loaders (except skid steers and possibly wheel loaders) don't have room to turn out and dump snow along the drive; you must back up to the ends to pile the snow. Send us a prototype of the snow blower model and we'll test on our drive. I hope it can handle a gravel drive.

RE: Why Some Areas Have Banned Boondocking

There will always be people who will abuse a privilege (long term Wal-Mart squatters). There will always be people (anti "Camp Wal-Mart" folks) who generalize all to being equivalent to some highly visible minority (long term Wal-Mart squatters) whose actions they dislike. People's travel habits and itinerary vary greatly: "getting there is half the adventure" "it's all about there, getting there is time lost" Until everyone accepts that their fellow RVer may not travel the same way there will always be these arguments.

RE: Hate shoveling snow...? Then you need this...

Lawn mowers don't do a good job at making hay; but hey, if you want to try. Go ahead. :)

Grapefruit Seed Extract?

Does anyone use Grapefruit Seed Extract in their pet's drinking water to help with oral hygiene? My Peg has bad oral body chemistry and always has dirty teeth even when she has bones to chew. Nell, one of her pups, got the same body chemistry. Some of our other dogs have clean teeth even with the same diet and chewing habits. I've read (and have heard) that adding this to their drinking water helps keep their teeth clean. Mark

RE: Nell broke off a tooth

I can see a root canal being used for cases where there still is usable tooth material left above the gum line; however, in Nell's case there isn't much tooth left. She ended up have 2 teeth extracted; a lower canine and an adjacent incisor which was very loose (no longer "connected"). Dr. Doug, since both vet practices own their own land and buildings (and have for decades) there must be a huge difference in overhead for one practice to charge $500-$1000 (5-8 years ago) for extractions and the other to change $40. Nell came home after the extractions and seems to be doing well.

RE: Two Unilaterally Deaf Pups in Bette's Litter

The rescuer is no longer taking applications for either pup; she has had to reject a couple of applications for various reasons. The thinks she has 2 good applications and will let us know once both are approved. The two boys were to be neutered today. Mark

RE: Nell broke off a tooth

We got the estimate for the tooth extraction and we're stunned. $40.00 We had teeth extracted a couple of times from another dog (pre-molars, molars, and upper canine) and those bills were significatly higher. I understand that the amount of work for extracting different teeth varries but we're talking more than an order of magnitude difference in price. The previous work was done at a different vet practice about the same distance from home; however, that vet practice is closer to the DC metro area than our current vet in WV. I guess this is another example of "what the market will bear" and we appreciate our current vet.

RE: Hair, hair everywhere

But most dogs are not 100% covered with fur as the shirt analogy suggests (not heavy coated on the belly and inside of legs). Besides, human physiology is not a good analogy for canine physiology (how I feel in a shirt at 90F is irrelevant); unlike humans there is very little cooling through or on the skin of a dog. Dogs don’t sweat (except on the paws) they pant!

RE: Hair, hair everywhere

I just get my dog shaved (not bald, or they would get sunburned) that takes care of dogs who like to play hard (or work). There is significant evidence that demonstrates a dog's coat insulates it from heat. I prefer not to shave a dog and eliminate or reduce the insulation value of the coat (especially over the back). I prefer thinning the coat and shaving the belly and insides of its legs where the blood vessels come near the surface of the skin and can exchange heat with the air. Mark

RE: Hair, hair everywhere

Pops, We kind of do that too; but our working dogs do benifit from having the dead hair removed in terms of regulation of body heat while working. Mark

RE: Hair, hair everywhere

Our worst shedding dog is Jasper the Greyhound; he is always shedding hair. We use the fuminator on him and our smooth coated Border Collies. We use rakes and combs on our rough coated Border Collies. Mark

RE: Who needs pickups anyway???

Guess if you own a property big enough for a dually in Germany, then devlivery costs isn't one of your worries in life...You could have probably just said "if you own a property in Germany".

RE: RVing and the economy

We still can't get out TT out of the area where it's parked on our farm because not enough snow has melted around it. Even if we wanted to travel, we couldn't. For a while there, we couldn't even get our vehicles down our drive and we were too busy to even plan trips. One more thought is you really need power in order to surf the web; many people were without power during some of Feb. I too would suspect weather as the issue. Mark

RE: Nell broke off a tooth

Nell's tooth comes out Monday and she is already back running with the pack without looking where she's going. CA Poppy, we kept 2 females. We've been working on getting photos but between life (i.e. Nell's tooth, lambing, taxes, etc.) and Tally (Renee's female) not wanting to hold still we've had a hard time getting good photos. We hope to get photos this weekend (after I get home from work). Mark

RE: Nell broke off a tooth

I got home from work just after things calmed down so I missed all the drama and blood. Renee showed me the teeth shards she pulled out of Nell's mouth. I had a dog (Blue) who had teeth pulled after breaking them off during severe thunderphobic panic attacks, one was an upper canine. He never showed any signs of missing the upper canine even when his lip would be curled up. The lower canine should be even less of an issue since it aligns under and next to the larger upper canine. The upper canine and root is huge and goes a long way up into/along the snout. Dr. Doug, it's good to get an inside perspective of these issues. Since we’ve been through it before we know what's ahead of us and Nell. Renee said she can look like her sire who broke off a canine later in his life and at times was affectionately called snaggles.
