RE: nova scotia area

Another wonderful thing in Newfoundland is their hospitality. Once they know your name they invite you to their house for dinner. They just want to hear all about you and where you live. They are marvelous. And I absolutely love the way they talk - - it is delightful. And the poster that said make it at least a month is exactly right. You don't want to rush this one - - relax, enjoy, poke around in the little villages, sit on the coast and let the breeze blow your hair - - wonderful. And be sure and ask them why their front doors that are six feet off the ground have no porch in front of them. Open the door, step out and fall 6' to the ground. So neat. We will go back. Bob

RE: nova scotia area

Fiver Bob, How does one actually get to Newfoundland with a fifth wheel? :) John, it was a tough swim, but the ole Dodge took it really well. Only a little water in the fiver. LOL It is a 6 hour ferry ride to Port aux Basques. It comes out of Sydney, NS. Baddeck is a good place to stay in preparation to leave - - the campgounds in Sydney were pretty small - - strictly overnight stuff. In NF, there is a nice campground a short distance from the ferry in Doyles called Grand Codroy that we found very convenient for arriving and leaving. The ferry system has larger ships than the Alaska ferry. We were well pleased with their service. We arrived in Nova Scotia on May 10th and it was fine. Not a lot of competition until the middle of June. Most parks were just opening with lots of space. Bob

RE: nova scotia area

I would recommend not limiting yourself to one specific area. Find a campground that is central to areas you wish to explore. We broke it into three distinct areas: 1) Southern Area We stayed in Granville Ferry at Dunromin Campsite. This gave us access to all the great things like Halifax, Digby and Digby Spit (with scallops fixed every way imaginable) and whale watching, the Blomdon area for rock hunting and on and on. 2) Five Islands area Great area for watching whales, tidal bore, fossil hunting. There are several parks in the area - - check in Parsboro and Five Islands. We stayed right opposite Five Islands Provincial park - - can't find the name - - sorry. 3) Cape Breton (northern section) We stayed in Baddeck at Baddeck Cabot Trail campground. This allows great access to the trail and all the neat things in that area. Don't expect the campgrounds to be like some of the US fancy ones. But all were comfortable with full hook ups. Now - - advice - - don't even think about going up there without going to Newfoundland. You will be sorry. Newfoundland is every bit as much fun or more than Nova Scotia. We limited ourselves to one month on the west side. We focused in around Rocky Harbor in Gros Morne for about 2 weeks, then moved up to the north and stayed in Pistolette Prov. Park. Absolutely amazing day trips out of there into some wonderful antiquity and quaint little villages like Cape Onion. So neat. If you go early, you will probably see some of the large icebergs floating by. You need to be up there by late May to catch that - - it was amazing in my opinion. Have fun - - we will go back. Bob

RE: air hitch for 5th wheel

One thing to look for in air "anything" - - how many bags and does it have a pivot point. If it only moves up and down, it will do a great job in removing the jolts from the up/down movement which then further helps chucking. But, it cannot move fore/aft which is what really helps kill the chucking. Something like the Air Safe moves in all directions - - up, down, fore, aft and sideways. It dramatically kills all movements. Bob

RE: We're at the Wal Mart in Winnemucca

Be sure to add Sams to the list. Usually look for Super WalMart first - - open 24 hours - - more likely place to overnight. A good source for their listings is a WalMart Road Atlas. It will listings for both Sams and WalMarts, whether they are Super or normal, address and phone number and which exit from the interstate to take if they are close to one. The atlas is available from - - now guess - - - - ready - - - WALMART OR SAMS. Hey, good guess. LOL Many Sams or WM's are near the interstate. There are usually a couple good restaurants in walking distance to a WalMart also. Some tips on parking - - stay out to the far fringes of the lot. Do not park near a main entrance into the lot - - (trucks and cars coming and going all night long). If your bed is on a slide, park with drivers side up against a planting area so you can kick out that slide. We use them often when trying to put some miles under our belt. I usually give them a call and check on overnighting in their lot ahead of time. No checking in, come in later, no unhooking, leave early in the morning and price is perfect. Especially nice if you have an inverter so you can watch TV and brew a pot. Bob

RE: Title change - looking at 5th wheels

THOR is not thought well of by anyone that has been around RV's for very long. They are cheap, therefore they sell them to people who don't know the difference. My advice - - keep looking. Bob

RE: TrailAir Question

You really need to consider an air hitch rather than an air pin. The air pin is hinged and only cushions up and down movement. Something like the Air Safe Hitch has four air bags, it moves in all directions - up/down, sideways and back and forth. This not only reduces the shock on both the truck and trailer from bumps but cushions for fore/aft movement (chucking) that can drive you nuts. By the time you buy a normal hitch plus the air pinbox, you can have an air hitch. Plus, the air hitch stays with you if you sell the trailer or pull another trailer. Love mine. Amazing difference. RE: Prodigy to Prodigy P3?

Russ - - it you want better braking, get away from the Prodigy completely and get something that is "truly" proportional. Look at Brakesmart or MaxBrake. These systems both monitor the pressure in your brake system and apply the trailer brakes accordingly. No guess work, no trying to figure out what the truck is doing - - it monitors what you, the driver, are doing and applies the trailer brakes according to exactly how you are applying the truck brakes. All the difference in the world how the two systems work. Well worth the addtional money for something this important. Bob

RE: JR Strong Arm Stabilizers

I have seen the JT's and just had a chance this past weekend to see something similar. I was quite impressed - - the rig was extremely steady. These are lighter than JT's and I think cheaper. There were three rigs in the campground with them on and about the same number with JT's. Might want to give it a shot and see what you think. They are called Plug-it-Right. http://www.plugitright.com/RVStabilizer.html Bob

RE: Alaska Trip

We hit TOK on May 20th and started out in third week in September. Never drove thru any snow until the Glacier Highway in Canada and it was a good one with cars in the ditch. We felt our best times were from arrival to mid June and mid August to departure. Loved it. Bob

RE: Canada Wireless

We relied on the libraries. Many communities have a spot in town for free internet for visitors. Found lots of them in Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. Bob

RE: Halibut in Alaska

We went out of Seward. All fish kept were in the 40 - 70 pound class with two over 100. Had our limit quickly and spent the rest of the time fishing salmon. Good trip and very scenic. Very rough coming back in with "holes" in the water. LOL Bob

RE: Bike storage in basement of Cameo Carriage

We put two bikes in our main storage area all the time. I put a heavy blanket between them to cushion and separate them. They will also fit in the front compartment in spite of the generator if I remove one wheel. If we are moving from one spot to another we many times just put the bikes inside the living area. A couple days in your sojourn south should not be uncomfortable with bikes in the living area. Bob

RE: Carriage Compass 34CK3

Good info on the previous post. The Compass has been dropped but still carries most of the great features of the Carriage lines. It was made on the same assembly line as the $150,000 Royals. Incidently, the Domani is still alive and doing well - - it will be back up on the website shortly. It is in the middle of model changes and not current on their reworked website. Bob

RE: Parallel Parking a 5th Wheel

Reminds me of some of the "State Parks" in California along Hwy 1. My first time out there I thought I was in luck with all those wonderful "State Parks" all along the highway - - surely there would be something open somewhere. OH YEH - - SURE THERE IS. All the sites are reserved by Californians. Further, the "STATE PARK" is the little stretch of road that is left after the rest of the road fell down the cliff into the ocean. Now if that doesn't give you the warm fuzzies while you are curled up in your bed sleeping that night, nothing will. LOL Finally ended up on a tip of land out toward the water where the fence had been knocked down - - one rig out there all ready - - by the morning there were 16 of us out there. Sure no where else to put it and you DON'T want to be driving that road in the fog at night - - NOPE. Bob
