RE: Opinions Please on 1st big Family Trip

I think your Stage 1 is pretty optimistic. Streets & Trips shows about 1800 miles between NYC and Colorado Springs. Doing that distance in 2.5 days with a total drive time of 25 hours means you will need to average more than 70MPH. Also, why go the Moab area twice (Stages 2 & 7)? We did the same route on the first leg of our cross country trip, 2.5 days from Massachusetts to Denver, left at 4 am ran until 9pm 1st day got to Indy. The second day ran from Indy to western Kansas started at 5:30 am drove until 9 pm. The third day we left Kansas at 6 am and arrived in Denver shortly after noon. I would say we averaged 65+ mph, so I would say it can be done from experience, just a long day driving each day.

RE: CrossRoads Cruiser

Hi I really don't want to spend a lot for a new Bunk house 5th, my kids are 13 & 15 and figure within 3 years they won't going much . I would rather buy a new adult version in a couple years. I did locate a few other used 5ths that I want to check out, none are Cruisers, but respectable brands just the same.

RE: CrossRoads Cruiser

Well the local cruiser was in poor condition, collision damage and a large delamination on the left side wall so I passed on it. So we'll keep looking for another 5th. Thanks Jay

RE: One more trip and back to weekends

Hi Congrats on the job! It has been a difficult time for many in this country when it comes to Unemployment and not un common for most to search for a year. It hit close to home last year, I lost my job after 10 years, another freind lost his after six years, and my brother lost his job as well. We were all fortunate especially me, I got a new job within weeks of loosing my previous job, my friend was nearly 11 months and was recently hired and my brother starts his new job in about a week. We are all greatful for being re-employed , we suffered some earnings and benefits reductions but we are working. There is no better feeling to be valued in the workforce, now we are all hoping it can be long term. Good luck and may your tenure at the new job be rewarding and long term.

RE: The high cost of attending RV events...

Hi I can expect to pay if there are a lot of activities, food a good location with services for a rally. I'm surprised about FMCA rally for $359, Im my observations around here, the FMCA ralliers try to locate where there is no cost to park, heck I think they all have a contest to see if they can get a host to pay them to stay! Many of the local FMCA ralliers won't go to a rally if they have to pay for anything more than a discounted meal and a free cup of coffee, I guess diffrent strokes for diffrent folks and regions.

RE: where to head this year???

Hi If you have more than 5 weeks and $10K I'd do a Cross country trip! I did one two years ago and with high fuel costs it cost me around $11K and took 7.5 weeks. We headed for Colorado from the East coast, was there on the 3rd day, Spent time in Denver, Golden, and Colorado Springs then we headed to Taos NM for a wedding, After the wedding we headed to the Grand Canyon, took in the tram in Albquere, NM along the way. ( plenty more to see in Colorado and NM but visited the area before). We spent 4 days on the southern rim, then onto the Hover Dam and Vegas. After 3 days in Vegas we headed for San Diego, spent 5 days there, then headed up the Pacific Coast Highway with a 5 day stop in Malibu & LA, 4 days on Pismo Beach, 4 days in the central valley 2 days in Laguna and Pebble Beach, 3 days in San Fran and two days heading to Lake Tahoe. ( I wish we spent two more weeks in Tahoe and the Sierra Nevadas, along with Yosmite. From Lake Tahoe we bee-lined to Salt Lake City after 3 days we headed north to Grand Teyton NP,and Yellowstone for a 9 day total stay. We then headed to Sturgis, got there for Bike Week, wow what a sight! Stayed for 3 days and took in Rushmore as well, we then headed to Sandusky, OH for a three day stay at the Cedar point amusement park, then a 18 hour trip straight through to home here in Massachusetts. Now if I made the trip a few weks longer I would have spent more time see Bryce, NP, Joshua Tree and a few more National parks in Utah, or headed further up the pacific coast to Washington and Oregon and headed east throught C'Dlene, Idaho and big sky country of Montana. These are trips of a life time and if you have the ability do it while you can! Because as life goes on, things tend to get in the way and prevent you from doing them :(. I know first hand, my parents had the means to do a trip like I did, my Mother always had an excuse not to and before long my Father was diagnoised with terminal cancer, and Mom ten years later still regrets the excuses.

RE: dealing with money

Great answers! We do have credit cards and have had them for 30 years. We do pay them off each month to avoid the interest, however this time we will be away from home when the CC bill arrives and will not know how much to pay. I guess we will have to set it up online and do as you suggest and check into the debit card thing. I really hate to hear about the downfall of the personal check though. DW isn't real good with math and keeping up with the checkbook balance. Lord only knows how she will handle the debit card? ( Not slamming her, she will tell you the same thing herself) Thanks again, very much for the help! 10CAN I have my local bank online. I check it every day to see what checks or automatic payments have come through. It gives me the running total which I then transfer to a spreadsheet along with each entry. I also have every credit card online so that I can check the charges as well as pay the balances well before due dates. All of this combines to keep me up to date without ever doing any math myself! After a few months the spreadsheet also allows me to look ahead and see what will be taken out on what dates and tracks individual expenses and credit cards, which in turn makes it easy to do my income tax return. My debit card is used to get cash when needed. I usually withdraw $300 at a time which is the maximum many ATM's allow. This keeps the costs per transaction down. We did a CC trip two years ago, Had on-line banking we would use the CC for larger expenses ( Fuel fill ups $175+) and the Debit for Cash and smaller purchases. Each day or two I would check CC and Debit card statements and just keep paying off the balances electronically. By doing this it keeps you mindful of what you have left ($) to complete your trip. I would definaetly have each of your CC or Banks know where you are heading and approximate time frames for each area, I did this and still found myself with a shut off CC & debit card :M . After two phone calls everything was normal because they looked in my account archives for the detailed trip plans and re-activited my cards. To safe guard this carry at least two different CC, one visa, one MC . I was using my MC Debit and MC CC and they though someone else was using it, so they shut them off. I was able to use my Visa to make the payment and then make the calls. I don't believe I could have gotten things straightened out so quickly had I not talked to a CSR prior to my departure. I would also recommend to carry some cash , I did run into an occasion once or twice where a CC was not accepted or their registers where "off-line" and not accepting CC or debit payments.

RE: More info on 1/2 ton pulling TT

My GAWR are 3,600 and 3,950. The GVWR is 6,800. Those are per the sticker on the door. I looked up on the internet what the curb weight would probably be for my truck and added 1,000 pounds for people and gear. So if the camper is 6,500 pounds, will it work? I think using just the GVWR I could be ok or right at the limits regarding pin weight. However, I researched the GCWR and it is only 10,000 for my truck, so I would be way over. Lastly, so many refer to "80% of tow rating", what is tow rating? Hi Every LT manufactured has a tow capacity based upon equipment i.e.; engine size, type of transmission gear ratio of drive axle(s), cooling system type , tire ratings and gvrw. What you have to do is to a bit of homework by determining what equipment your truck has and plugging in the data when looking up your truck on a tow capacity chart. Make sure you accuratley look up the data or your specific truck and read the fine print or foot notes. You will also have to factor in what you will be carrying in the truck when towing and that means all the passenger weights other than the driver and gear, which will be deducted from the calculated capacity, once done the math the number you get will tell you what your maximum towing capacity of your truck. Another factor for some vehicle manufacturers is "Frontal area" of your trailer they may state "X" amount of area, typically 8'x8'= 64 sq Ft. The 80% rule is a recommended guideline for safely operating your combination (TV & TT) without "Maxing" or Stressing your truck to its breaking point. You should also look at the length of your trailer and the wheelbase of your truck, short wheel based trucks do not mix well with long trailers, so keep that in mind as well.

RE: CrossRoads Cruiser

Hi Thanks for all the quick responses! I know CR's has had a good track record with their products that's why I would consider one of their trailers. I'm happy to learn about the axle issues, at least I can take a look to make sure any changes that were needed have been done, if not it becomes a point of negotiations. I hope to check it out over this weekend, if is going to happen it, has to be done within the next two weeks. I have a 1800 mile trip coming up in mid April and would have to have a hitch installed and move everything from one trailer to the next. Thanks again for the info and if anyone has anything else to add please do! Jay

CrossRoads Cruiser

Hi I'm consider moving over to a 5th wheel and found a used 2005 Cross Road Cruiser 28BH and was looking to get some info and feed back on the model. Can anyone who owns one tell me what they have found to be the strengths and weaknesses of the model or brand, layout?, contruction? quality? towing characteristics? etc? Can anyone tell me what type of Frame CR used, Lippet? or their own? I have a Dodge 3500 SRW Mega Cab with a 6.7L CTD and a 6.5' bed and was wondering if a slider hitch will be needed? Thanks for any info !

RE: Ultimate RV Trip Destination

Hi Well I would have to say the majority of responders seem to think of Alaska as their ultimate destination. I too share in Alaska as my ultimate destination. The second most popular destination seems to be some type of "National Parks Tour". I was fortunate to visit Yellowstone, Grand Teytons, Mt.Rushmore and The Grand Canyon. We did the trip just two years ago and to say the least they are breathtaking in their own unique way!

RE: Price negotiation

Hi As a former owner of a RV dealership, the manufacturers would typically sell us a TT for 40% off of true MSRP. They also would provide additional incentives like free shipping on every third pop up , or additional three months of flooring if we purchased left over inventory in the off season. The best incentives were from standard run trailers bought in lots of five or more. A standard run trailer is when the manufacturers would take excess production time and plant capacity and build 200-300 units all exactly the same with surplus or old stock. Typical $17000 trailer we could buy for $12500.

RE: Ultimate RV Trip Destination

I would want to spend a year traveling but my husband would not. I have moved him from two weeks and ready to go home after one to complaining that six weeks is not enough. Maybe I should go down and buy a Lotto ticket. Sounds like my wife, maybe we have the wrong spouses? lol

Ultimate RV Trip Destination

Hi If you had a opportunity to head to any one destination with your Rv without finacial limitations and time limitations where would you go? Please be general, ( cross country , Alaska, Mexico, Canada, etc.) and why would you go to that location? I would be heading to Alaska, to see what that part of the country is like.

RE: How to fix a hole in the Fridge

Hi To make the repair sound, invisible and long term, scuff surrounding area(1-1.5" out from edge of hole) with 36 or 40 grit sand paper, clean and apply 3M brand Automotive Panel boding adhesive , allow to cure. Once cured sand smooth with 40- then 80 grit sand paper. Next step is to mix and apply bright white marine gel coat over the 3M black adhesive, allow to cure, sand smooth with 220, 320, then 600 grit wet sand paper, polish with automotive rubbing compound. This is not a difficult or time consuming repair, it will take 10-15 minuets over 4-5 nights, good project for after work.
