RE: Going through Canada

The only odd thing that happened while we were there was we went to eat and I asked for tea with my pizza. Well they brought me tea alright, hot tea. Guess I should have specified that I wanted iced tea, I just assumed they knew what I meant. :-) That's the same for us when we visit that strange land to the south of us. We have to specify 'hot tea' otherwise we get that cold stuff with ice in it! Cold tea is just plain weird. To me it's like cold gravy or cold soup! ;) That is half the fun of travel though. If it were not different, you may as well stay at home!

RE: Any problems taking Mex Shrimp into US?

Just make sure that the shrimp or prawns down there that you do buy are wild ocean caught ones and that they do not come from the extensive shrimp farms that are just to the South of Mazatlan. If you drive near those when the wind is in the wrong direction, it'll knock your socks off! I'm amazed that here on the coast, the locals will not touch any farmed salmon because of the taste & health hazards, but won't hesitate to buy those 'Tiger Prawns' that are farmed in SE Asia and South America. Yuk!

RE: US Dollars--take note:

Pulsar, I'll have to refigure that number 235.2, as that will be for the 'little' US gallon. I was so pleased to tell my know it all Brother in Law today as he always talks about fuel consumption in that silly way as he knows I never do. He then told me that it didn't work out & it must be the US gallon. Now , where's me slide rule? ;)

RE: US Drug Problem

Legalize them all; sell them in government run stores. Keep the tax dollars and drug profits. There are a couple of good points about this. 1) It will provide a lot more tax money. 2) It will cut down on a lot of costs of monitoring the border. It will also eliminate the violence associated with the drug industry, but of course this industry will not simply switch to legal farming, transportation, distribution & marketing. They will look out something else that will provide them with the same amount of income for the similar effort & risk. I cannot think of any alternatives that will be any better for society as a whole, most are much , much worse. It is very naive, to say the least, for any one to think that legalisation will solve the violence problem. It will only move it somewhere else, and at the same time making a lot more drugs available to a lot more people.

RE: Any cigar smokers here?

Well there must be something in this cigar thing. My son & DIL, who have both never smoked, went to Cuba for the first time a couple of weeks ago. They tried the cigars there as they thought it appropriate. They smoked them the whole time they were there, and have been ever since they got back! Poppa ain't too pleased!

RE: Liz needs a car

I don't know if you can get one in the US or not, but see if you can pick up a copy of the magazine 'Top Gear', yes it's from the TV show of the same name. It has a list of specs & performance figures of all the cars available in Europe. It's amazing the number and how many of them are available as diesels. Jags, BMWs etc. When I was over there I had the loan of a Renault Clio, nice little car, lots of room for four people & luggage and 68MPG. I know this doesn't help you, but it sure would be nice to have more of a choice, beyond the VW diesels, great cars though they be. Maybe one of these days!

RE: What time will it be ?

Eastern daylight time is 4 hours behind UTC. UTC is 12 hours behind IDT. So it is 16 hours behind, or 8 PM the day before the new day. It looks like it's a 7 hour difference between the IDL and the East Coast. Glad we were able to clarify that for you! :) Actually I used the time in the zone to the immediate east of the IDL. and MathewB probably used the time to the west of the line. Normally GMT is FIVE hours ahead of the east coast, but we have adjusted our clock for DST & Europe will be doing it later this month.

RE: US Dollars--take note:

It looks as though 235 is the number to remember. I know there are tables to look up to do the conversion and Stan's offer to lend me the overhead conversion on his vehicle is very kind though somewhat impractical! Thanks Pulsar!

RE: Observations from our First Mexico Visit

As some on this forum will attest we have many Mexican friends who are very poor. I could care less about their " class". Your sarcasm is not appreciated and misplaced. Well at least I am pleased that you recognise it as sarcasm. I would hate to think that you consider you have similar values to myself as unlike you I could not care less about 'class' and would NEVER ignore someone else's opinion simply based on his income level or social standing.

RE: US Dollars--take note:

The only measurement that I personally consider to be more intuitive is the Fahrenheit scale over the Celsius. This is only for the reason that for 98% of my life, both in the UK and Canada, I have lived in areas where the normal extreme temperature range is 0-100F. Accordingly, I don't have use any negative values like you have to use in Celsius. On the other hand, the one metric measurement that makes NO sense at all is the way that Fuel consumption is measured, Litres per 100 km. The lower the number is, the BETTER it is! Plus there is no easy way(I would love to be corrected) to convert this number to MPG. For heavens sake you can't even multiply it by anything to get an MPG!

RE: Observations from our First Mexico Visit

I have to agree with Moisheh, If one is not careful, one may find oneself, eating with the lower classes. My brother in law is a janitor and he knows nothing about the finer things in life, what we knows. One should never take advice from one's inferiors!

Hmm.. so a 'Pace' is TWO steps? It's amazing the steps that some people will take, just to prove that they were right all along! ;)

RE: Out of province medical coverage

I have gone to the hospital ER, and my wife to a GP, in Ontario without any problem or additional 'form filling'. It's just like going here in BC. I have heard, though, that it is different in Quebec. Quel dromage!

I really think this needs further investigation. I'll be making a couple of phone calls on Monday.

RE: Time Change,... Break-it-Down...(for dummies)

I have argued that if people want a extra hour of daylight to do things, have your place of employment or schools just start a hour earlier and leave the damn time alone. I don't know where you work but I think that most would find it's easier just to change the clocks!

RE: Not yet SPRING, but don't forget to...

With it being on the second Sunday in March, the date can be anywhere from the 8th to the 15th. It makes sense to have it this early, or even a bit earlier actually, as it is about the same time AFTER the solstice as it is BEFORE when we change the clocks in the fall. When I first came over here, they didn't change the clocks until the end of April, which made no sense at all. It looked as though they were trying to get 6months of DST and 6months of standard time.

RE: ALCAN-Canada & Firearms-Gravel Pits

I don't think that Tom is telling porkys, I'm thinking that maybe our border people are getting a little lax in their enforcement for some reason. I have read the actual rules and they don't say anything about handguns will only be allowed in for competitions. It just says to fill out the application and send it in. I assume that it asks on the application the reason for bringing in the weapon. I am basing my belief on the competition thing on what people have said on this forum, unless for a competition, you won't be allowed to bring it in. Same for long guns & shotguns. It doesn't say that they cannot be used for personal protection, but if you say that they are then you will not be allowed to bring them in.

RE: '80's Performance cars-which one would you want ?

My 1st choice from the list would be the Ferrari. 2nd The Lotus. 3rd The BMW M3 In a very distant 4th place would be the....... um..... er..... No, I'd just have these three!

RE: ALCAN-Canada & Firearms-Gravel Pits

I am very surprised by this. In all the years of the 'gun threads' on here I always had the impression that the only way that you would get a handgun permit, is if you could prove that you were taking part in a competition. Is the gun sealed in some way? do you have to produce the sealed gun when you leave Canada? Is it possible that they think the gun is a rifle? I can't believe the last one, but it is run by the government!
