RE: Caulking around shower pan?

Oh contrare........I would caulk everything. After many years of fighting water around showers in my TT's I make it water tight. Tell me how it gets sealed where the two or three walls end to meat the curtain area or the door area. I seriously dought that the factory caulked very good in these areas. At least in the 3 tt's I've owned they all leaked!!! After caulking all around and up and down I have been able to stop the water from coming out of the shower. The three TT's were three different manufactures, Award, Fleetwood, and now a Forest River. JMHO and experience........................... Paul B

RE: Wheel Chocks For Jayco?

Rotochoks remain the state of the art. Measure the inter-tire distance and order direct from the manufacturer. Ours have completed five seasons and still look and perform line new. Glass reinforced nylon and stainless steel construction. No tools to mount or dismount. No rust. http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-11/892154/LYIAK-IMG_0386.JPG -- Chuck Just curious.....Chuck what is the reason for the orange wheel chock?? Paul B

RE: Turn Signals dim on E250 when TT is hooked up

Check all grounding connections. Make sure the contacts in the bulb sockets are corrosion free. Usually a bad ground or connection somewhere. JMHO....... Paul B

RE: OD or NOT?

The way I figure, towing out of overdrive will not hurt a transmission. Towing in overdrive "may" cause mechanical stresses and shorten the life of the transmission. So for a couple miles per gallon loss compared to the cost of replacing a transmission, why would a person take the risk ? I personally do not like towing faster than 62- 65 mph and works just fine out of overdrive. Reckon I've been to way too many car wrecks in the fire dept no need to take the risk; mechanical or loss of life due to speed My manual says it's ok to tow "in" OD. That said if it starts to hunt too much I shift out of OD. Of course I have a FORD and you just have a.........;) well you know....... Paul B

RE: The gas/diesel debate - not an issue for 1-tonners?

I had 7.3 and 6.0 PSD Excursions and now have an 8.1 big block 3500 van that works out much better for me since we only use it for a few trips a year and it just sits in the driveway. A diesel does not start well after sitting for months at a time. Shhhhh. don't tell farmers that.....they might not get any work done. A lot of their diesels sit for the long winter months and lo and behold they start mostly without any problems. JMHO............... Paul B

RE: how to get better Ford 7.3 diesel mileage?

I have put a 4" turbo back (no cat) exhaust system with Walker truck muffler. No noticeable change in mileage, EGTs or power. Sounds good though. I then put on a Ford "desert dust" air filter with a few added holes. No change. The elements are non-cleanable and well over $100. I went back to stock filters 'cuz I've got a box full of replacement elements. I have run Stanadyne since the truck rolled off the hauler. I liked the lubrication in the old days, but with the ULSSBFD (or whatever) that's out there now, I think it's more important than ever. I get about another 1-1.5 miles per gallon. The Stanadyne comes close to breaking even, cost wise Last year I added a chip. Boy howdy! Serious seat of the pants increase. Empty mileage went from the 16's to the 18-19's. I don't check towing mileage anymore... too depressing and it is what it is. I didn't add the chip only for increased mileage, I wanted to increase the range without adding another fuel tank. Without the chip, I used to be looking for fuel shortly after 300 miles. I took a trip two weekends ago (solo) and at 400 miles I still had some left. This chip advertises that they get more power without overfueling. Sounded nuts to me, but it works. If you are not hand calculating your numbers they are off due to the chip. I speak from experience, I have a chip too. I did mine not for milage but added power. What happened to me was a HUGE increase in pulling power(and without pulling), WITHOUT a decrease in milage!! My experience with my chip: 18 to 22 open highway non towing, around town 12 to 14, and towing 10. Always got 10 when towing wether I towed 10k+ or 5.4k!! Just the nature of my beast. I used www.DP-Tuner.com chip and can tune on the fly although I keep it in the 80 eco tune. I also have a couple of other goodies that DO help EGT's, and if you do decide to chip get a set of gauges to monitor EGT's, boost, and tranny temp. You won't regret the added expense. If not it could get VERY expensive...... JMHO............ Paul B

RE: Diesel Oil change $$$

What you all are missing is that a dealer has overhead and has to pay the mechanic. With the price of oil these days $100 to 150 is not out of line. No I am not a dealer and do my own oil changes just so I can check things out. JMHO.......... Paul B

RE: 5er broken into?

I can be in any rv in about 2 minutes with just a screwdriver!!! It happened to mine and it opened my eyes. They first tried entry with a 3 foot crowbar and were unsuccessful at the door!! Messed up the jam somewhat but the deadbolt held. Then came out the screw driver, they were in!!! Hint.....window. Nuff said. Paul B

RE: What downsides to slideout awning?

I've had it both ways. I see no need to have one now. Try and clean the mold and mildew from under one and you will probably not want on either. We would get junk under ours once in a while and it can be a pain. Now all I have to do is climb up the rear ladder and take a quick look to see if there is anything to sweep off, usually not. I'll spend my money on other useless things that I really don't need:B. JMHO.............. Paul B

RE: Tail waggin the dog advice..

Doing more reading folks he has a somewhat light TT so I'm guessing tongue weight is somewhere around 1000 lbs +-. And he has a huge counter weight in the front in the form of the diesel. I feel something is wrong with the hitch set up much more than a too light front end. Just sayin...... Paul B

RE: Tail waggin the dog advice..

Sorry but I just couldnt think of any better way to put it in the subject line. :-) I have a 05 Dodge, 3500, Q cab, Cummins, 4X4 with srw and a 07 Forest River Wildwood 30 bhbs TT. The camper has bias ply tires, Im not using a load leveling hitch (although I have one, tried it and it doesnt help). My problem is the trailer is pretty much all over the place. I cant even make the slightest steering wheel corrections or the butt end of my camper is all over the place. I see people in my rear view going WAY out to stay clear of the back of my camper. All we have ever done is 200 to 400 mile trips, we're thinking of a trip from VA to FL now and the thought of the stress the wag induces is just too much to take. Radials on the camper, better load dist hitch, new camper? help! Thanks for any and all help, in advance. Ram you have one heck of a towing machine. Start from scratch. Get the instructions for hooking up your particular hitch(I use the reese dual cam). And start form step one. You shouldn't be having towing problems. I tow a 30' Forest River product with my Excursion with narry a problem of sway. Why, I followed the instructions to a letter, weighted the rig and adjusted as needed. I have factory suspension to boot. You shouldn't even know its back there. You may think you don't need WD but even with your truck you really do. Good luck, Paul B
