RE: State Park camping right next to the beach?, NJ, DE, MD

Assateague NP is a favorite. The have no hook ups but so much to do with ranger programs. They give you choice of oceanside or bayside. We prefer bayside because there is some shade and grass.SP has some electric hookups.Kiptopeke SP in Virginia is about an hour south of Assateague. You have to walk to the beach from all of these campgrounds but Kiptopeke has full hookups and cable!

RE: Size Matters

We camp in alot of National Forest and State park Campgrounds.
I guess,I'm different than most.I would never go bigger than a 25ft TT. My main reason for saying that is because you will really limit yourself to the number of sites which you have to choose from. The other thing is manouverability,ie: getting into and out of tight places. Our TT has a seperate bedroom in the back with a walk through bath and basement storage. It works great for us.Been on several 2 and 3 week trips and never felt crowded.Of course,if you have kids that would change. A 5th wheel you could go a little bigger because of the design and fact that the trailer extends over the tow vehicle. Our house is only 40ft long so owning a unit in the 30 to 40Ft range would be like taking the house with.

Sherando Lake is about 10 miles west of the Parkway but is a very nice campground with electric hookups in 2 of the loops.

RE: Where have all the trees gone??

Ya know, some people like to stay at WalMarts where there are no trees. So,these type of people would appreciate that they have no trees.Plus, the big rigs may have trouble getting around with some low hanging trees. But for me,I like trees and like to go camping at state or federal parks where you have shade and privacy.I leave the satelite dish at home. When I'm on vacation,I take along several books and magazines to read,go hiking, swimming etc.My wife usually takes along a few videos incase it rains. If KOA thinks it will improve their bussiness by cutting down their trees, that's up to them. But I won't be staying there.

RE: Beach camping in DE, MD or NJ??

Maddox Campground in Chincoteague, Virginia is nice. Your are within bicycle distance from Assateague National Wildlife Refuge which has a nice beach and paved riding trailes where the ponies come right up on the trails.Dogs not allowed in refuge but are allowed at Maddox.Chincoteague is a nice old town with nice restaraunts an old movie theater and 2 good ice cream places.Maddox has full hookups,a pool and is located under tall pine trees.
Assateague National Park has both bayside and beachside camping with no hookups. Both allow dogs. The state park has one loop with electric hookups and they were proposing allowing dogs this year but not sure if it went through.
Another good choice would be Kiptopeke State Park.Southern most part of the DelMarVa Pennisula.Full hookups and cable.Walking distance to the beach. They allow dogs.

RE: What about Fort Boonesborough in Richmond KY?

While Ft Boonesboro wouldn't be on my top 10 list,I would have no toruble recommending it to someone looking for a campground in that area. They water and electric hookups, some shade trees and the bath houses were clean. The noise from the quarry was minimal and it didn'tcause any dust,at least while we were there. We liked the recreated fort.

RE: Bulltown Camp West Virginia

WE stayed there twice it is an Army Corps of Engineers Campground. You can choose between water front or wooded sites. If you have a boat, they have mooring posts at many sites. They have electric hookups at a number of sites. There is also a beach nearby and a visitors center which showcases some of the old homes which were relocated out of the flooded area. There is also a short trail to a civil war battlefield site. From what I remember, the nearest stores are about 10miles away.Below is a link where you can see pictures,a campground map and other information.

RE: Wash.D.C. & civil war trip

http://www.nps.gov/frsp/vc.htmWe enjoyed our Ranger led tour of the Fredericksburg Civil War Site. As noted above, the Marine Corps Musuem at Qunatico is worth seeing. We stayed at Aquia Pines in Stafford, Virginia. I have seen some bad reviews of it and maybe it has changed since we were there, but we enjoyed our stay there. They even offered tours right from the campground.

RE: need a park near A. Lincoln birthplace in Kentucky

We haven't stayed at any state parks in that area, but we have stayed at other Kentucky State Parks and they're pretty nice.We did visit his boyhood home in Indiana and there is a state park with campground right across the road.

RE: snow melt rate, French Creek, PA

Things have changed from years ago. I remember quietly playing the radio and a ranger telling me to turn it off since it was after quiet hours. Now you can't even find a ranger. We usually go camping in the spring and fall instead of the summer. We also avoid weekends by comming in on a Sunday and leaving before Friday to avoid the crowds. I'm sure there will be more cut backs this year for our state parks since the economy's still in the tank and state revenues will be down again.

RE: Arizona’s Loss, California’s Gain?

We, as campers, are the ones who use the campgrounds.
If it was just the campgrounds,I would agree. There are more to state parks than the campgrounds. Some states charge campers extra fees for use of the day use facilties. Problem is,we don't always use the day use facilities but we have to pay for them anyways.Perhaps they need to charge more for the people who use those day use facilities instead of charging us when we don't use them.

RE: Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania / Wellsboro / Tioga County

Many Pennsylvania parks do have electric hookups. They usually have water faucets through out the campground and have dump stations and showers. If you insist on full hookups you'll be over looking some very nice campgrounds.Below is a link. Click on the area of the map and scroll down. They have a list that shows you what amenities our state parks have.

RE: Arizona’s Loss, California’s Gain?

I understand that this is a camping forum, but I wish the mods would understand thaat these things effect us as campers. We need to get this information out and let our elected officials know that as campers, when we use a state park campground,we pay fees that put money in the treasurey and we buy things at local establishments which pay sales taxes which also puts money in the state treausrey. If our elected officials don't get it,we need to let everyone know who's to blame for the shortsightedness when the state parks are closed.

RE: helping a friend

This may be at the edge of their 10 hour window, but it should fit thier needs. Pipestem resort State park in West Virginia has an indoor pool and plenty of activities.I'm not sure how many of them are available in April, but the pool should be open since it is inthe hotel that is in the park. We stayed there many years ago and had a fine time.Check it out here:

RE: Maddox Family Campground, Chincoteague Va

WE have stayed there twice, both times in September and liked it. Camping under tall pine trees. If you take bikes, you can ride them to Assateague National Park where they have a few miles of paved roads that are closed to cars for part of the day. The ponies often come up on the road. They also have a nice wide beach.Plenty to do in Chincotegue, good restaraunts and Mr Whippy's and The Creamery for ice cream. You can also take a trip to Wallops Island visitor center and check out exhibits on the space program.

RE: Am I reading this right about Yellowstone campgrounds?

The only campground in Yellowstone that has hookups is Fishing Bridge an they won't have electric hookups for this season because they are re doing the electric system.

RE: Baltimore to LA - 4 weeks with kids...routes/ideas please

I-40 generally follows the path of old Route 66 through the south west.We prefer state or federal campgrounds over commercial campgrounds because you generally have more room. While they usually don't have full hookups, they usually have flush toliets and showers and many have electric with places to fill up with water and dump your tanks.Grand Canyon is a must. We stayed at Circle Pines KOA in Williams. They have an indoor pool and hot tubs. You can drive into Williams and take the train to the canyon or drive up.We then went to Dead Horse ranch State park in Cottonwood. From there visit Jerome and Tuzigoot. We then went north to Canyon De Chelly and stayed at the National park Campground and took a tour of the canyon. If you take the northern route on the way home,I would strongly suggest Yellowstone for a few days.
