RE: Outfitter Trip Report: Whazoo In Wonderland pictures

As usual Dave it looks like you had a great time. Thanks for sharing. Hi Steve, I sure as heck am glad to read your reply, and hope you are doing well. Is your desert as green as mine? Take care Steve, you and your wife...Yeah we are pretty green here as well and I hate it.....cuz it means in a couple months my hay fever will be in full swing.

RE: What kind of camper is this??????

... could it be an Apache camper of some kind? The stylized tee-pee (the brown triangle looking thing) on the side would suggest so.

RE: 2011 Superduty Diesel Looking Good

.... At nay rate all of the new (2007 and up) diesels require ULSD fuel not always available in Mexico, Central America. ....The 2007MY Fords DO NOT require ULSD. When Ford switched to the 6.4 (and thus ULSD) they also did an early model year change over. So for Ford the ULSD requirement came on 2008MY trucks.

RE: Cheapest a/c for 9.6 camper?

I have thought about that until I found a couple of places I looked up don't allow them ( stupid I know). But a good idea none the less. ThanksWhat places? Why not? IIRC this is an actual factory option on Northstar TCs.

RE: loading a 2005 1025 lance on a 2008 GMC 2500HD

I think I remember that there is an issue with the tailgate opening being smaller (bottom corners are radiused instead of squared off) on the newer GM trucks.

RE: Cheapest a/c for 9.6 camper?

If you have a small window (or space to cut one) on your back wall the cheapest A/C is a 5K BTU window unit.

RE: Being stealthy when boondocking

steve Thank you for your service... many of the members of the forum are veterans. I thank all of us other vets too. We too raised a grandson... he died in 2006... a 20 year old Army PFC. I worked until 65 to be able to afford to do what we want. We don't smoke, drink much alcoholic beverages, or carry a balance with a 21% interest rate on a credit card... we live well within our means. We still live in the modest house that we've lived in for many years. We don't make excuses for not being more successful... we accept who we are. We do fit the defination of boondocking as "living without the services of connections to water, electric or sewer... for up to 6 months out of the year. you can hold your breath until you are red in the face, hit the floor licking and screaming... I'll still be boondocking and calling it that. "Those Who Can, Do; Those Who Can't, Teach." You still won't be teaching me about boondocking... and why would you presume that it is your mission? SleepyMy mission??? Pretty full of yourself aren't you!! How do you get your head through that small camper door?? My original post had nothing to do with you and only presented my view (and that of most others) on what constituted "boondocking". My second post was simply to refute your comments that insinuated that since you are retired and thus able to spend tons of time in your TC that your incorrect use of a term was more justified. As well as your statement that if people weren't living as you do that they were somehow not gathering any worthwhile memories. Your latest comments as to your frugality and ascetic lifestyle do nothing to make the incorrect usage more valid and lends nothing to the logical discussion. They are in fact off topic and serve only as an attempt at distraction. But since you seem to feel it's important information that people need to know, for the record I have led a far less frugal lifestyle and yet will retire in five years at 56 with the ability to do pretty much anything I want. Dry camping is simply going without utilities, which can be done any where. Boondocking is doing the same except well away from civilization, hence the incorporation of boonies in the name. They are two distinct situations. You can dry camp in the middle of NYC but it is no where close to boondocking. You might want to ask the next English teacher you meet about how important they consider the proper use of words to be. As I stated earlier the incorrect use of the term to describe over nighting in parking lots is simply an effort to make sleeping next to a homeless family sound more glamorous and inflate someones ego as to their abilities. Spending 1000 nights actually boondocking takes some real skills, spending the same amount in parking lots is no big deal. There are legions of homeless people that do it more often then that.

RE: If you have Toyota Tundra truck to haul your camper..

The BIGGEST reason the US Govt is showing such an interest in the current Toyota troubles is DIRECTLY due to their partial ownership of GM (Govt Motors). If that was the case, Ford would be the biggest target. Ford has passed both GM and Toyota for the #1 spot.Much as I like Ford, they are no where near being #1 in car sales worldwide like GM and Toyota are battling it out for. They also aren't fighting for their life like GM.

RE: More 19.5" wheel questions

Hi Clay! I didn't realize you would have that low of gearing. Thats already pretty low. From just a quick check if you go with the 245's you'll effectively reduce your gears to about a 3.50. That's very low gearing for hauling around a camper. For the record, his gearing is "high" not "low". Low is 4:10, 4:56, 5:13, etc. The smaller the axle ratio number the higher the gearing.

RE: Being stealthy when boondocking

For seven decades I have heard... "Those Who Can, Do; Those Who Can't, Teach." Irrelevant Well I can assure you folks that doing it is a lot more fun than worrying and chewing my finger nails to the quick on what to name it!No worrying needed, the names have already been made, long before you even thought about it. I'm not going to use seperate terms for what we do every night park and sleep; sometimes on the rim of the grand canyon, sometimes on the capital grounds at Helena, MT, or a Casino in AZ, or on a beach in FL, or maybe along the contintal divide in the grass lands of WY... And yes... Walmarts... our last trip was 177 days long... 11 were in Walmarts... of the 11 WM stays 7 were along I-90 as we returned home from San Fransisco. (15 of the nights were in Hawaii... hotels and the Pride of America ship) So my wife and I lump all of these nights together except the Wakaki Beach hotel and the NCL ship into "boondocking"... it's our choice! We went to Hawaii on our dollars instead of a campground owner going on our dollars. Until you have the time or the will to get out and experience a different experience every night just remember; You can continue to try to teach those of us that do what to name each night. "Those Who Can, Do; Those Who Can't, Teach." Most school teachers wouldn't bother with our use of the word "boondocking"... they are out collecting their own experiences and their own memories during their breaks in schools... we meet them as we travel. Sleepy You can't teach an old dog new tricks anyway!Believe me, I have QUITE a few memories of my own. I have been to many of the States to include KeyWest, FL and Adak, AK. As well as Hawaii and Guam. Been around the world (18 countries) and from above the Arctic Circle (30 days in a tent in well below freezing temps) to almost the Antarctic. Parachuted out of planes and helos (day&nite). Rappelled off mountains and from helos. Been mortared in Lebanon and almost killed by a sniper in Somalia. Humped for 50 miles with a full combat load in 22 hours. Have 2.5 years at sea (Pacific, Atlantic, North Atlantic, Indian and Arctic oceans along with the Mediterranean). Been through several storms at sea that had green water breaking around the ships bridge and us walking on the walls. Seen dolphins pacing the ship and schools of flying fish. Driven M1 tanks, LAVs and AAVs. Rock crawled in my 4x4 over boulders bigger then cars on the Hammer Trails (and others). Spent over 20yrs driving various 4wd vehicles (that I modified myself) over some of the toughest terrain available. Helped build a Baja racer. Navigator in an off-road race truck in the Mint 400. Backpacked through Yosemite. Shot rifle/pistol competitively. Rode hundreds of miles through the country on my Harley. Raised two kids and now have a 17yo grandson. Though I admit I made some of mine when I "boondocked" ours in places you could only dream about getting yours to, not all of life's important memories are made in an TC. Just because someone uses their TC a lot doesn't make their incorrect use of a term any more correct. Neither does hitting retirement age before someone else nor who they might meet add any credence to the incorrect term's usage. By your own admission above you are just too lazy to bother differentiating the types of use in your posts. So given that, why don't you simply use the word "camping"? It is slightly more correct and even takes less keystrokes to type.

RE: Old Truck Camper articles on Popular Sience online

Great link! I especially enjoyed the "two plywood boxes" camper in May 1967 - early Alaskan?....Definitely NOT an Alaskan (they started in 1953 BTW) but I would venture the original idea came from looking at one and then expanding on the concept.

RE: coleman mach 3 airconditoner question

One of the smaller units (Polar Cub 9000btu) is a better fit for a TC. The smaller unit won't cycle as often and will maintain a more uniform temp. Vice going from freezing (A/C on) to hot (almost as soon as A/C shuts off).

RE: Furnace wouldn't ignite - no heat

Another thing to check if the furnace fan is blowing but there is no heat, is the voltage of the batteries. When low it will allow the fan to run but won't activate the LP solenoid. In my previous ClassA I woke up to a cold RV a couple of times before I figured it out.

RE: How do I disable the 12V option on 3 way fridge?

Why not leave it the way it is and just select the source manually? After all how many times would you have to change the setting in a day? That way you can still have the option of selecting 12V when on the road for hours, which would conserve LP.

RE: Tailgate down or off???

The tailgate will help support the rear of the camper but at the expense of rock dings and slightly harder loading. Your call.

RE: Being stealthy when boondocking

Walmart is not boondocking!!!! ...it is Wallydocking :B:B:BI too am of the opinion that what is done at WalMart (or any other parking lot) is dry-camping. Boondocking is also dry but done in the "BOONIES". The "toolies" and the always popular "middle-of-nowhere" will also fit the definition. I have stayed at Walmarts on several occasions, especially when I only need to get a couple hours of sleep before moving on or am using it as an easy to find meeting spot with others before we head out to the "BOONIES". Ridiculous to pay a CG for a night (and their amenities) in that instance. But I have NEVER considered it boondocking. People that tell others they are boondocking (when at a WalMart) are just trying to make what they are doing sound less like what the homeless guy in the car next to them is doing.

RE: If you have Toyota Tundra truck to haul your camper..

I have owned 8 Toyotas over the years (9 Fords as well) and the Toyotas were ALL extremely reliable. I had a couple that might have been the subject of a "secret recall" which I actually thought was a better solution, since it meant that as soon as I had a problem the dealership took care of it instead of waiting for an official recall to be put out. It is my opinion that Toyota's quality level didn't start slipping until they shifted production to the US. Give them another 20 years and they will be in the same boat as GM/Ford/Dodge. The BIGGEST reason the US Govt is showing such an interest in the current Toyota troubles is DIRECTLY due to their partial ownership of GM (Govt Motors). Just like how the biggest recipient (by a HUGE margin) of recent Federal Grant money to develop an electric car was GM, with Dodge a distant 2nd and Ford so far back that the money was just for show.

Yeah, my PSD 6.0 was REAL reliable. :RMy 04 wasn't (was bought back) but my 06 that replaced it was and current 07 is.

RE: Popup TCs

Am i missing something,I thought the topic was about retaining heat in cold temps in a popup. If you re-read the OP's original post you will see where he also asked "Anything else we should know about this kind of TC?" That pretty much opens the doors to anything pop-up related.
