RE: North Alabama

look around Cullman, there are a couple there. We Live near Montgomery and when we head North after work we stop there. gets us past B'ham.
We stay at Cullman Campground it's a little of the highway and down some back roads but very quiet. Nothing fancy but a good overnight. The owners are great people. There are several resturants and diesel fuel available at the exit as well.
There is another one called Good Hope just south of Cullman, can't say anything about it as we have never stayed there.

RE: Crappy weather

We had the coldest winter I can remember here. When you have snow more than once in Central Alabama. But things are looking better. We spent last weekend at the river. Lows were in the 40's with spotty rain. Kind of felt bad for the tent campers.
Tomorrow we are forecast for Sun and 70's. We go to pick up the new 5er too.

RE: Aluminum vs Steel Rims

On the subject of off roading, I did last week with the rig pictured in my sig. Went to back in to a sight and as I straightend the truck and started to back up I wasn't moving.
This was at our local COE and I had been on this sight several times. You can't get on it wihout leaving the pavement. But the rains had been there and I sunk.
To get out of it I got my platic leveling blocks and made a path for all four back tires. She came right out.

RE: Aluminum vs Steel Rims

Something to be aware of, since you're going from 15" to 16" trailer tires and wheels. Some of the aluminum trailer wheels have deep well lug nut holes and a 4-way lug wrench will not work on them. So, if you get them, make sure you have the right tools in case you have a problem on the road.
Got that covered. I carry a full craftsman socket set as well as a full impact set breaker bar, extensions and torque wrench.

RE: Aluminum vs Steel Rims

Some comments here brought back some memories from buying our current 5er, Particularly the recall notice about aluminum rims working loose. We actually had steel but they sent everyone a notice just in case.
Bigger issue, I guess, is I have yet to find an aluminum rim I like the looks of.

RE: NJ Buyer, buying out of state (anyone ever do this)?

We bought a truck and 5er in GA and brought them back to AL. Both times we had to do the DMV work ourselves.
We just needed to complete a title application, present a bill of sale, and pay the taxes and fees.
If your financing, you may want to check with the bank about attaching the lean to the title.

RE: rv show prices

I was at the show here last year and saw a 5er that was interesting. Since DW was across the street at the ballet I asked the salesman for a model number and a brochure. He responded by asking what truck i had. After I passed the can you tow it quiz (it was a heavy 5er), we started talking.
The "sticker" was total BS. it said $76,000 show special $53,000. The salesman just opens up and says this model usually leaves the lot in the mid 30s.
We did go buy the lot later to look at it but they had dropped it while moving it around and the frame was bent.

Aluminum vs Steel Rims

I'm going from 15 to 16 inch rims on the 5er. I've noticed most people making this switch go with aluminum rims. ANy technical reason or is it just for the way they look?
Not the 5er below. We pick up the cougar at the end of the week.

RE: changing the fluid in my Allison transmission.

First read this it explains the conversion process for transmissions that did not come with Transynd.
Allison TSB 1099B
You will need around 7 quarts per change if I remember correctly. But it varies depending on which pan you have on the transmission. Since you have to do it twice, figure on buying 4 gallons.
The process is not that different than changing engine oil.
1) remove drain plug.
2) unscrew filter
3) transfer donut magnet from old filter to new (only thing different)
4) fill new filter and install
5) replace drain plug
6) fill transmission
We have an Allison service facility in Montgomery and I buy my fluid and filters there.
I did see a drop in tranny temps after I did it. And since your in the desert that could be worth it.

RE: Fleetwood thermostat convert to digital ??

high Gregg,
If it's the Duo Therm slider, try these links
Hunter conversion
Pdf version
I used the Hunter 42995B from Walmart. You also need a small switch from Radio Shack and some Basic soldering skills.

RE: E machines laptop at Walmart

Its almost as cheap to buy a new machine with Windows 7 than it it to just upgrade to Windows 7 ;)
That's what I did; a factory-new 64 bit Dell with 4 times the memory, 4 times the harddrive space, Windows 7 already installed and running, less than twice the price of the upgrade alone. It's a no-brainer.
And that makes me wonder, how is Acer, making anything on this one
Windows Home premium
Wireless N
Duo-core processor
DDR3 ram
CD/DVD Burner
250gbyte hdd
15.6 inch screen
The only place they did skimp was that I had to make my recovery disk set. So i spent 2 bucks on blank DVDs. When you start it the system prompts you to build them and walks you through it. After that the function is available to build an updated image at any time.

RE: E machines laptop at Walmart

Dr Baker,
I agree, I had an e-machines desktop a while back and it was a bit loud, could be they were just being aggressive at cooling.
I will say this one is virtually silent. The only time I here anything is when the DVD is running. Which I forgot to mention is also a DVD burner.

E machines laptop at Walmart

I was looking for a laptop to use for surfing in my recliner. My Compaq EVo is getting a little dated.Saw a $298 e-machines in the Walmart flyer
and decided to try it. Figured if it was junk I'd take it back. Well other than some Win 7 issues it's been great.
The specs I found online are outdated. It has the T4400 duo-core processor and 3 gbytes of DDR3 (not DDR2) ram.
As I said Win 7 has had a couple of issues. Naturally a ton of updates. The big one was that initially it saw and shared with the mshome workgroup that my XP machines were on. Then it stopped. A little reading and I found that WIN 7 defaults to "workgroup" vs "mshome" so it does not play well with XP machines. And the workgroup name is buried a bit further. getting them on the same name solved it.
I guess I should just give my network a real name and wouldn't have these problems.

RE: Compact air compressors-what are you using^

The mv-50 will handle fiver and truck tires. I bought my MV-50 when I had my F250 and had to run 85 psi. never had a problem getting to 85psi. with the 3500 dually I only need 65 psi so it's even easier.
The MV-50 is not a cigarette lighter plug compressor. it has clips that connect to the battery as it is rated to draw 30 amps.

Old friend Gone, New one waiting

Well, after 5 years of fun and adventure, we dropped our 5er off at the dealer. We spent the last three days camping came home and unloaded everything. hauled her over and did the initial walk through on the new (to us) 5er.
This was our first 5er and second RV after our TT. We weren't really looking but when I was getting propane, I walked through a used Cougar that was sitting there. It had 4 bunks vs our 2, higher bed room ceiling up front, and a list long lists of upgrades compared to our Springdale. We had a tight budget when we bought the Springdale and for the money it was a good deal.
it may seem odd to trade for a same year but DW really liked it as well and we got it for our unit plus $2500 dollars.
We had 3 issues on walk through, a missing bin in the fridge, propane needed filling, and the gas struts for the garage don't hold. They told me about the struts when we looked at it, and had to reorder them because the wrong size came in.
Here is a pick of the Cougar

RE: Dealer prep & walk thru

Not knowing how the dealer prices things it's hard to say if it's a good deal or not. As said earlier, no dealer is doing things for free. I'd look at the overall price. if this is just detailed accounting and the price is better than other dealers why does it matter?
Now if the dealer is selling at the same price as others, and tacking on $1100. Don't walk away, RUN.
Our local dealer has no fees. The price negotiated is the final price, no prep, do document fees, nothing.

RE: What tire would you use?

high folks, haven't been around for a while and when I am i find a thread that is on topic for my latest issue.
Dropped off a deposit on our new used 5er. It was a great deal except for the tires.
Our current rig came with Duros. They lasted about 2 years then massive sidewall cracks. Had our tire guy get us Marathons and they have been flawless for the last 3 years.
The new 5er has some brand of China tires. There is about 5 inches between the tires which are 28.3 diameter by spec. I was thinking of getting 5 of the 16 inch 6 on 5.5 rims from e-trailer (rated for 80 lbs). then using LT tires. Thinking about BFG Commercial TA in LT225/75R16/E 2680@80 psi. The 29.4 inch size should leave 4 inches between and about 3 inches above. Any suggestions.
My biggest issue with ST's is availability. Unless you want Duros, carlisles or Chung Kings you have to order them. Also the speed rating.
