RE: St. George Utah - Boondocking Advice?

There is a BLM area on rt9 on your way up to Zion Nat'l Park. It's about 5 mi east of the little town of Virgin, UT. It's not marked but it is on the right side of the road next to the Virgin River as you are heading toward Zion. You should see other campers in there. And, like DesertHawk suggested, check out the BLM office in St. George. Get off of I-15 at exit 6 (that's on the south side of St. George), go east on river road for maybe 1/4 - 1/2 mile. It is on the left hand side of River road. Feel free to PM me if you need more info. I'm camping in the area now. There is Snow Canyon State Park just north of St.George That BLM spot is call Mosquito Cove, some where around mile marker 24 on Hwy9 outside of Rockville and its a great place. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-Of/Tuweep4-320/768720317_WpKuz-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-Of/Tuweep4-333/768725027_nw6pS-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/802185260_izFb4-M.jpg

RE: Zion and Bryce NPs

Zion and Bryce are use the National Park Pass (80 dollars), if you decide on doing the River Walk in Zion check with the ranger on the water level. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/photos/802223697_gJGrB-M.jpg Bryce has many goods trail to walk and its sounds like this is your first trip there. The general store inside Bryce has free wifi, also one of the trail that a lot of people miss is the Mossy Cave Trail http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Alex-and-Julies-Romps-to/182/368183615_WDJos-M.jpg Its localed on Hwy12 east of the main entrance to Bryce.

RE: Zion and Bryce NPs

In Zion Emerald Pool, Weeping Rock and River Walk are all easy trails to walk, we were there this pasted Oct. 2009. Just beware of the squirrels, people have fed them so much that they aren't afraid of people anymore. There's a very good grocery store right by the main entrance in Springdale in which is within walking distance of Zion campgrounds. Last Chance Get Away of 2009,part7

Last Chance Get away of 2009 Our original plan was to visit Yosmite National Park and explore the surrounding area, but due to the spreading fire we change our plans at the time. After much discussion and some Internet searching it was decided to go a couple of areas that we hadn’t ever been to and re-visit a couple of national parks we’ve been to before. Zion Nation Park Part7 Day One Oct. 02,2010 We rose from our slumber before the slivers of morning light could breach the crest of near by mountains in the narrow valley in which stayed. Our camper sheltered us from the nightly cold; Julie’s excellent black brew would be need by me to thaw my bones out and smooth some of the stiff joints. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-002/791816558_8c6SC-M.jpg I sweep away out the protection of our mobile shelter with my hot bone-warming brew with camera in my free hand to make use of the early light in a picture taking way. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-004/791820170_FHtw2-M.jpg Motoring through Rockville was pleasant in the cool morning with hardly a soul about. The sun was slowly crawling up the mountainside with the promise of a warmer day. We knew from yesterday that the road in was being worked on and traffic might be slow today, but there wasn’t a single construction crewmember along the roadside today. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-007/791816563_NpGUU-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-009/791816756_jppG8-M.jpg A young deer crossing the road was a sight to see, no fear as it moved over to scratch its ear, as we rolled on by. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-015/791817882_FxMd6-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-017/791817967_WDszu-M.jpg A flash of our National Park passes and before you know it we’re parked heading for the shuttles. We had decided on walking the Emerald Pools trail today. One of things I like about coming to Utah is how blue the sky is. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-021/791819296_aSTNW-M.jpg We had pass through Zion before, but this would be the first time into the inner working of nature little workshop. These shuttle are quick to get you about, for we ‘re at Zion Lodge and making our way to the trailhead. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-022/791819317_NT2ab-M.jpg Like with any outdoor place, sometimes one has an encounter with the local wildlife. We did move on passed this Tom turkey stopping for a morning drink and the four hens accompanying him. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-026/791819351_vCgAC-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-027/791819440_YfnvK-M.jpg Stopping on the bridge spanning the Virgin River, just taking in the view and deciding on which way to walk Emerald Pool trail. Such a hard decisions to make, we decided on the trail to the left of the bridge. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-032/791821022_mziyC-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-033/791821091_YNsVh-M.jpg A gentle climb upward the trail did and many other hikers were out enjoying their adventure. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-037/791821979_wTFYU-M.jpg Even the local flowers are out greeting hikers as they passed by. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-044/791822183_P98er-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-045/791823263_fVqjF-M.jpg Not long up the trail we came across a group of young volunteers doing trail improvements, all work was being done by hand. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-057/791825733_HEcaA-M.jpg Reaching the middle pool I could see why they are named Emerald Pools, lots of algae gave it that green look. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-066/791827703_sabbk-M.jpg Wanting to get some better photos of this spot I climb passed the chain barrier, you know the one with the sign on it that’s says “Don’t Cross”. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-070/791828620_NQ8aY-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-072/791828720_Lf6WW-M.jpg Video Middle Pool Waterfall Moving on to the upper pool trail, this would be the most difficult trail of the three pools to hike. While walking back to our rig I spotted a fellow TCer, Julie and I stopped for a bit to talk to the couple from Oregon. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-152/796286723_2nByr-M.jpg On the way out of Zion we stopped at the local grocery store just outside the main entrance, to our surprise it was nicely stocked and no rip off pricing. After restocking supplies and heading back to Mosquito Cove with traffic on the lite side we were back by the Virgin River set camp back up not far from our original spot. It wasn’t long before a lady came to our site and asked if we could help get their rig unstuck, for they driven off the hard pack road into a soft area and got stuck. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-156/796286988_X3dNL-M.jpg Video Dragging a 5th Wheel Once that was done it was back to our chosen site , camp fire going and a beautiful sunset to watch while eating dinner. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-163/796287398_MeRmE-M.jpg http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Last-Chance-Get-Away-part6/Zion-NP-166/796287331_hhTFU-M.jpg Thanks to all for following along, tomorrow Julie and I will explore farther into Zion.

RE: On my Way: Death Valley, Mojave, Josuah Tree

rabbitangel, This is the problem with your routing efforts is Altadena, you aren't sure if you are going to stop there coming or going. It makes a big different in routing, mileage and camping along the way. If it was me I would go this way: Pinnacles NM to Altadena- 291 miles Altadena to Joshua Tree, Cottonwood Entrance-157 miles Exit Joshua Tree thru the Oasis or Indian Cove entrances on the north side of Joshua Tree to Death Valley-271.5 miles Most of this routing is interstate and no matter how one route the place you want to see your going to have some grades( 4-10%) of some type to climb. There are several routing possibles, but again Altadena is the problem, before or after Joshua Tree. If you tell me for sure about Altadena I could help you much better, for there are many places to see and stay (some are free).

RE: Getting to Death Valley

Hello iradi8, Death Valley is one of my favorite places. The 190 going through Towne Pass is a bit steep so going up will be slow. Make sure that you top off your tank before getting there for gas/diesel will run about a 1.50 more per gallon inside the park. Here's a link for current Road Conditions inside DV and this Link for DV weather. Furance Creek is the only place inside DV that you can buy diesel/gasoline and Stovepipe Wells has gas only. Scotty's Castle no longer has diesel/gasoline so top off before going there.I would suggest that you go to the Truck Camper forum and read many trip reports listed in the Truck Camper Trip Report sticky on Death Valley. If I can be of further help just PM me or post another question here. http://travelingman2.smugmug.com/Travel/Death-Valley-part-3/Death-Valley2-105/401219048_3g7Tn-M.jpg
