RE: Is the E350 an upgrade from a F150?

I get better MPGs towing with my V10 than I do with the same trailer behind one of our 5.4L 3.55 E350s. (Empty is another story however). I can match the fuel economy towing with our 2005 F150 5.4L XF4. (again same trailers, but in this case pretty light)

RE: WW 4005 FTL - New A/C's - need suggestions...

Your airflow problem most likely has nothing to do with the AC unit, if it supplies adequate air directly from the unit.
It's probably:
-blocked where the AC ties into the duct
or
-The ducts are really really leaky and air is just infiltrating or exfiltrating through any crack/gap/hole it can find.
I had the 15k BTU on my weekend warrior. Duct flow was adequate throughout the trailer, and I only had one AC unit.

RE: D E F pricing

Get a Dodge with a Cummins. No DEF. Just fuel up and go. Truck of the year in 2010.
Cigar Mike
Is that really a benefit, if it means you get lower fuel economy than a DEF truck? Adding DEF is no harder than windshield washer fluid.

schwartzworld - There is a forum member on here (ClevelandJim) who lives near you, and has an E350 V10 he tows with. He sold his Powerstroke Excursion once he got the van. Maybe he'll provide a little show & tell for you?

RE: Is the E350 an upgrade from a F150?

The wheel base may be too short for a 30 FT. To answer your question, yes, it is a down grade.
If the E350 does not have the tow pack, it does not have the additional oil, transmission and engine cooling.
The shipping wght of the E350 is 5,960 lb's plus 1,000 lb's of people and cargo leaves about 6,000 lb's for a combined wght of 12,960.
Your call.
The van is not to short for a 30' trailer. My trailer was 41'. Just towed a 35' footer home last (on a standard ball mount at that).
The upgraded cooling/trans cooler/power steering cooler/engine oil cooler all comes standard on the wagons. Ditto with trailer lighting (fully isolated from the van's lighting). The trailer brake/battery charge may not come however, depending which year. Dealer can order the complete factory Class4 tow wiring harness.
There are van models that have higher GCWRs, up to 20,000 pounds with the Diesel or V10.

RE: F450 with new diesel engine - 16 mpg empty

Urea is $2.799 at the pump in Oregon, and available at Pilot truck stops (among others).
Nationwide, it as also available at every Ford, Mercedes, and BMW dealer.
Ford offers Urea in 1, 5, 55, and 275 gallon quantities.
Ford designed the tank to provide 7500 intervals. So tank size will vary with expected fuel economy (ie F450 will get a bigger urea tank than the F250). The driver will be notified when approx 800 miles remain.

RE: Engineers Needed! How to use a trailer dolly with a Hensley?

BTW - you can also buy a wheel for the trailer tongue jack. I used it regularly when parking my 30' Jayco in the barn.

When pushing, the Hensley will just park its linkages to one side or the other. When pulling, is will pull pretty much like normal. Like TenOC said... It doesn't know what's pulling it.

RE: F450 with new diesel engine - 16 mpg empty

At 12 mpg, and high estimate Urea consumption or 2% of diesel consumption, it would come out to an extra $0.005/mile.

Funny. The 2 cars in the video did not look like they were having any issues towing (unlike the one pickup shown).

RE: GM is spending $$$

I think it's good GM is spending R&D money on their trucks.
What we have to watch out for, is that GM may be spending MOST of it R&D cash on trucks. People have short memories. $4-$5 fuel will be back before we know it. I wonder if GM will be caught with their pants down again? Yes, they have some new small cars coming out, but they must be exceptional new cars to gain market share.

RE: Family of 6: Which TV to buy?

Yes, it should be legal in all state, even though the "name" may vary. In Oregon, it falls under the definition of an auxiliary axle. There are a lot of people who fear anything new or unknown. The engineering behind the safety hitch is sound.
Where you could find yourself facing a problem is length limits on some roads. Using the Safety Hitch means you will be quite a bit longer than pulling with a pickup. And, since its not a conventional combo, you probably would be noticed. My only other concern with the safety hitch is driving in snow. At allows you to pull a lot more weight without adding any more drive axle weight, which I suspect could make chains necessary sooner than typical. And, if you are in the NW, when chains are required, you would also have to chaining up the safety hitch axle in addition to the van's drive axle and one of the trailer axles.

RE: F450 with new diesel engine - 16 mpg empty

The urea is to control emissions, not to improve fuel efficiency.
Urea does improve fuel economy on DPF trucks by removing the need for regen cycles.

RE: Family of 6: Which TV to buy?

Melanie,
There was a thread in this section regarding this items with in the last year. Altho I am recalling closing it for some odd reason. BUT< with that in mind, there were 3-6 folks that used them and liked them for various and sundry reasons. The ones with the 16" wheels vs 15" wheels, seemed to have better reviews. There were 2 maybe 3 brands, one was better recived than the other(s).
marty
The only user of a similar device on that thread (it its the one I'm thinking of) were owners of the Hitch-Buddy.
The Safety Hitch is a much better device IMO, because it has a steer axle, which is also speed sensitive I think above 40 it does not steer at all), so it will be maneuverable and stable at the same time. . I would certainly like to get one eventually too, because there are no options for decent sized conventional Toy Hauler.
I actually had talked with Safety Hitch a couple times, but I decided to come back to school for a masters degree (2 really) so the toys are on hold for a while.
Please be sure to come back and put up some pictures when you get it.

RE: 2011 Ford 6.7 fuel mileage article

Thanks for finding that chart. Effectively, the 15% lower 4th gear with 3.31 gears is like having a direct drive 4th gear coupled to a 3.8 rear end. Likewise, 5th gear is also a little lower. Overall, you aren't losing any performance with the 3.31 gears compared to 3.73 gears with the Torqueshift.
6th gear is basically a freebie, and it probably a major factor in a better fuel economy. So it may not be useful while towing heavy, but you are still better off with the remaining 5 gears. What is I really like is the true manual override for the transmission. It ill not ignore the driver's gear request unless the engine drops below 900 RPM.

RE: Sudden acceleration issue with new 2011 F350 Diesel!

Currently at Pilot in OR DEF is $2.799 per gallon. Ford estimates Urea use will be 1.5%-2% of fuel used. If the truck gets 22 mpg, the Urea will cost $25 per 10,000 miles, or about 1/4 penny per mile.
Also, Ford dealers will carry DEF in 1 or 5 gallon jugs, 55 gallon drums, and 275 gallon totes.

RE: Nissan Quest - Odd turn signal problem

Your problem is probably the turn signal flasher. Most flashers on vehicles are made to work 2 lights and if you add more it will not work. Try getting a heavy duty flasher from an auto parts place..
You cannot just "upgrade the flasher" on newer cars. You must use a powered converter for the turn signals.
